Dubai, October 1, 2025- The UAE Media Council has announced a firm stance on the use of artificial intelligence in media. The council now bans AI-generated images of national figures and symbols without official approval. This move aims to protect the nation’s identity and stop the misuse of digital tools.

The council’s strict regulations come amid rising worldwide concerns about AI misinformation. They remind social media users and media creators that creating AI content with national symbols or public figures without permission violates UAE media laws. A recent incident triggered this: a social media user shared an AI image with Sheikh Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE’s founding father, which many found inappropriate. This sparked a strong reaction from the public, highlighting the need for clear rules. The UAE AI image ban is a clear warning to respect national values and symbols.

Why the UAE AI Image Ban Matters?

The UAE Media Council issued an official advisory to stress careful and ethical use of AI in all media. They highlighted several illegal uses of AI content: spreading false information, promoting hate, defaming or attacking personal dignity, and violating societal values. Any such misuse is punishable under the Media Violations Regulation. The UAE AI image ban specifically prohibits AI-generated content involving national symbols unless officially approved. This step helps keep public discourse respectful and truthful.

The council also plans to use new technology to monitor media. They recently partnered with Presight, an AI big data company, to build a system that checks media content in real time. This system will analyze and filter digital content to ensure it aligns with national laws before it is published. The UAE AI image ban is part of a broader effort to combine innovation with responsible governance. It ensures media evolves while protecting public trust and national traditions.

Supporting Local Media and Ethical AI Use

In 2025, the UAE Media Council held a board meeting chaired by Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Butti Al Hamed to discuss media policies. They focused on supporting local content creators and regulating digital news platforms, especially on social media. More than 1,800 creators are registered under the Mu‘lin permit system. The council aims to make the UAE a global media hub based on ethics and innovation.

The UAE AI image ban fits within wider legal frameworks. Under federal law, media must respect state symbols, cultural heritage, and identity. The 2024 UAE Charter for Responsible and Ethical Use of AI guides how AI tools should be used in line with national and social values. This charter supports the ban and encourages ethical AI practices.

The UAE AI image ban sends a clear message: AI technology must be used responsibly. It protects the dignity of national symbols and public figures. This policy builds trust in media and preserves the UAE’s cultural identity in a digital age. Content creators and users must follow these rules to avoid penalties. This ensures digital media in the UAE grows strong, ethical, and respected worldwide.

In summary, the UAE AI image ban is a vital step to prevent misuse of AI in media. It safeguards the nation’s values, supports local media growth, and promotes responsible AI use. This law helps the UAE navigate the future of digital media with care and integrity.
