October 3, 2025 | Dubai, UAE: Abu Dhabi Transport has unveiled two landmark systems during Global Rail 2025 that will redefine urban mobility: the Abu Dhabi Light Rail project and the Urban Loop rapid transport system. Abu Dhabi Transport announced that the Abu Dhabi Light Rail project will enter service by 2030, while the Urban Loop rapid transport will begin pilot operations within six months.

Urban Loop rapid transport Breakthrough

The Urban Loop rapid transport system, launched by Abu Dhabi Transport, is a self-driving, autonomous rapid transit solution designed for short-distance travel. Abu Dhabi Transport confirmed that Urban Loop rapid transport will start pilot operations on Al Reem Island in two locations within six months. Featuring advanced cooling systems and enhanced dust protection, the rapid transport pods ensure passenger comfort in Abu Dhabi’s climate.

Each transport pod accommodates up to eight passengers, four seated and four standing, and integrates seamlessly with Abu Dhabi Transport’s existing bus and smart mobility services. The system supports speeds up to 50 km/h, though testing is conducted at 20 km/h. Bypass technology enables Urban Loop rapid transport pods to skip intermediate stops, optimising energy use and reducing wait times.

The Upcoming Project Details

It is a major initiative by Abu Dhabi Transport that will connect Al Raha Beach, Zayed International Airport, and Etihad Plaza during its first phase. Extending through southern Yas Island, the Abu Dhabi Light Rail project will serve Yas Mall, SeaWorld, Ferrari World, and Yas Marina Circuit.

Design and construction for the Rail project commence next year, with service slated for 2030. Abu Dhabi Transport emphasises that the Abu Dhabi Light Rail project will offer a fast, reliable, and sustainable alternative to private vehicles, reducing congestion and emissions. By linking residential areas, business hubs, and tourist attractions, the project strengthens urban connectivity and supports Abu Dhabi’s sustainability goals.

Global Rail 2025 Showcase

Global Rail 2025 provided the platform for Abu Dhabi Transport to unveil both the project to over 20,000 international visitors from more than 100 nationalities. Abu Dhabi Transport highlighted how the rapid transport and the Abu Dhabi Light Rail project integrate with existing mobility solutions to deliver a seamless transport ecosystem.

Continuous expansion of EV charging infrastructure, coordinated by the Integrated Transport Centre, ensures that electric autonomous taxis and future electric trackless trams and light rail vehicles receive priority access to charging hubs. This supports the emirate’s target of reducing transport-sector carbon emissions by 40% by 2040 and underscores Abu Dhabi Transport’s commitment to a fully sustainable, interconnected mobility ecosystem.

Strategic Integration

Abu Dhabi Transport’s Urban Loop rapid transport will complement autonomous taxi services on Al Reem and Al Maryah Islands, creating a smart mobility network anchored by the project. Both systems integrate with trackless trams and bus services, reflecting Abu Dhabi Transport’s commitment to a unified, technology-enabled transport network.

Real-time data sharing across services enables dynamic route optimisation: a rapid transport system adjusts pod frequencies based on demand, while trackless trams between Marina Mall and Reem Mall adapt schedules using space-based GPS and GIS inputs to avoid congestion. Hafilat card fare integration further streamlines transfers between modes, encouraging a shift from private cars to a cohesive, technology-enabled public transport ecosystem.

Future Expansion

Proven at Paris 2024 to move over 30,000 passengers, the rapid transport’s lightweight design and minimal infrastructure requirements make it ideal for rapid urban rollout. Abu Dhabi Transport plans further phases of the Rail project to extend inland, with potential links to Disneyland Abu Dhabi on Yas Island. These expansions will bolster Abu Dhabi Transport’s vision of a climate-neutral, smart-city transport network.

Abu Dhabi Transport’s dual launch at Global Rail 2025 of both projects underscores the emirate’s leadership in sustainable mobility innovation.
