December 7, 2025 | Dubai, UAE: With December enveloping the UAE in warmer climates and the holiday spirit in the air, the streets of Satwa in Dubai have been changed, not into sand dunes, but the mini forest with the smell of fresh fir-trees that have just been imported. People are resorting to imports of real pine and fir trees to foreign countries, in order to bring a hint of winter wonderland into their homes. The beginning of Christmas in UAE comes with the introduction of the green fir, a time of expectation, selection and Christmas-decorating.

Trees Come To Canada, Denmark And More

The harvest of fetes trees this season is magnificent for Christmas in UAE. Tall auburn-green firs of Denmark, dense deep-green firs of Canada, are seen by the shopper, each of which has its own allure. One of the most popular choices that the households with large living spaces enjoy for Christmas in UAE, is the Danish fir that is approximately 8-9 feet in height. They are traditional in their conical form and powerful in the attachment of branches, which are suited to festive lights and decorations. According to the vendors, a tree of such size will cost about AED 750.

Canadian firs which are characterized by dense foliage and green colour are also required for Christmas in UAE. What is more popular about them is not their beauty alone: with proper care, they can stay fresh and green for up to 45 days, which is enough to get them through the entire period of the holiday season.

Yet it is not only about great centrepieces for Christmas in UAE. In the case of apartment dwellers or smaller places, smaller potted trees, usually of Dutch origin, are also sold as well. These short-stemmed firs take up space of 2 feet or less and cost around AED 200 and they are used by the students and young couples or anyone who would want to create the festive tone in a small house without having to spend on full-sized trees.

The Way The Trees Are Transported To The UAE

Transporting the real fir tree into a Dubai house is not an easy task. They are felled in their native countries where they grow e.g. Denmark or Canada and are then carefully packed in nets and shipped in chilled containers across the oceans. They take a trip of about 25 days to get to the UAE where they are kept in cold-storage and carefully unpacked to sell. Each day, the vendors pull off the lid of the needles and shake them off before leaving them to be viewed by the customers.

It is a painstaking operation and, at the same time, makes the firs alive and well when they arrive in houses, a little logistical miracle that turns Christmas in UAE, a desert state into something that resembles an English winter.

Early Buzz of Christmas in UAE

Funny enough the rush of trees has started even earlier in this year. According to the vendors, the inquiries began to come in as early as late November – much earlier than the normal early-December rush. Even before the arrival of the shipping containers, families have been making reservations on trees.

As soon as December has come, so has the vibe for Christmas in UAE. People flocked to Satwa, some came to find towering fir to decorate large halls, and others visited small potted trees to find suitable apartments. The diversity gives a wide range of options such that any big or small household will be able to find a festive centrepiece that matches their space and style.

The Reason Real Fir Trees Still Win Hearts

To install an actual tree for Christmas in UAE, with the environment of the desert and the city-apartment, may be considered heretical. However, the tradition is still accepted by many residents as well as expatriates because it is authentic. The smell of fresh pine and the traditional shape of a fir tree reminds of the home of the colder countries during the Festival season.

There is also a nostalgic attachment, families that used to spend their Christmas celebrations with real trees tend to use natural firs rather than the artificial ones. In addition to scent and beauty, there is the physical experience of adorning a living tree – hanging lights, ornaments, etc. that introduces a physical tradition to families not close to snowy winters. To most families in the UAE, the real trees symbolize not just a party, but a moment of will to call home.

Christmas in UAE might not have snow or frost, but it brings along the world-famous traditions in the desert. The smell of fresh fir on the streets of Satwa, the scene of families bargaining as to which is the best tree, and the staging of the entrance of firs which were brought in from other continents, all these convert a cosmopolitan holiday into reality. Even with the momentum of the festive season, these imported trees help fill in the gaps between the cultures and climates and remind everyone that at its core, Christmas is about warmth, community and celebration.

Whether you are a long term expatriate, a native born resident or a visitor, the presence of a decorated fir tree in a Dubai apartment building (green, fragrant and full of Christmas cheer) is an affirmation of how traditions move, migrate and prosper miles away.
