In a significant humanitarian move, the United Arab Emirates has announced that all individuals currently unable to depart the country due to the recent airspace closure will have their overstay fines waived. The decision aims to alleviate the financial and legal pressure on thousands of travelers caught in the midst of regional flight disruptions.
Scope of the Exemption of Overstay Fines
The Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP) confirmed on Wednesday that the waiver applies to all fine-accruing categories, provided the expiration occurred on or after Saturday, February 28. Those eligible for the exemption include:
- Visit and Tourist Visa holders whose stay period has ended.
- Residents who have already cancelled their residency permits and are awaiting departure.
- Individuals holding exit permits that expired during the shutdown.
A Humanitarian Response to Regional Crisis
The ICP announced that this measure directly shows the UAE’s humanitarian method for handling emergency situations. The government intends to protect guests’ legal rights throughout this time of uncertainty by eliminating financial penalties that result from events that travelers cannot control.
The airspace restrictions have caused multiple days of flight cancellations, delays, and diversions, which have left travelers without available seats on the few flights that operate. The ICP announced that this action considers the “exceptional conditions” that visitors experience during the current recovery period.
Support at Airports and Centers
To facilitate this process, specialized teams have been deployed across UAE airports and Customer Happiness Centres. These teams are operating under activated business continuity plans, working in close coordination with aviation and security authorities. They are currently assisting travelers with:
- Resolving cases related to delayed or rescheduled flights.
- Clarifying visa status and providing necessary documentation for departure.
- Offering logistical support to those stranded at terminals.
The Authority has reiterated the UAE’s commitment to supporting all visitors within its borders during times of crisis. Travelers are urged to avoid relying on rumors and to follow only official government channels for regulatory updates and instructions regarding their travel and residency status.
