Emirates ID renewal has become more convenient for UAE nationals after the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) announced that citizens can now renew their Emirates ID cards up to 12 months before their expiry date. The new rule, announced on July 14, 2026, doubles the previous six-month early renewal window and also allows eligible applicants to renew their Emirates ID and passport together in a single transaction when both documents expire around the same time, streamlining government services and reducing administrative procedures.

The ICP said the initiative is part of its ongoing efforts to deliver proactive government services, improve customer experience and support the UAE’s digital transformation agenda. By allowing citizens to renew their identity documents earlier, the authority aims to make government services more efficient while reducing administrative burdens.

Renewal Window Extended from Six Months to One Year

Under the revised regulations, UAE nationals no longer have to wait until the final six months before their Emirates ID expires to begin the renewal process. Instead, they can submit their applications up to one year in advance, giving them greater flexibility to plan ahead.

The authority believes the extended renewal period will benefit citizens with demanding work schedules, frequent international travel or long-term commitments abroad. Early renewal also reduces the risk of official documents expiring unexpectedly, helping citizens avoid interruptions when accessing government or private-sector services.

Officials said the longer renewal period is expected to spread applications more evenly throughout the year, easing pressure on service centres during traditionally busy renewal periods and improving overall service efficiency.

Single Transaction for Passport and Emirates ID Renewal

In another major enhancement, the ICP has aligned passport renewal with the new Emirates ID policy. UAE nationals can now renew their passports up to one year before expiry, matching the revised timeline for Emirates ID renewals.

When both documents are due to expire within the same period, citizens can renew them together through one application instead of completing separate procedures. The integrated service is designed to reduce paperwork, minimise processing time and eliminate the need for multiple appointments.

According to the authority, combining the renewal process simplifies document management while making government services more convenient for citizens.

The initiative reflects the UAE government’s broader strategy of integrating public services through digital platforms and reducing repetitive administrative requirements.

Part of a Broader Digital Transformation Strategy

The ICP said the latest changes form part of its long-term strategy to modernise identity and citizenship services through advanced technology and digital innovation.

Over the past several years, the authority has expanded its range of online services, enabling citizens to complete many government transactions electronically without visiting customer service centres.

The authority said proactive services are becoming an increasingly important feature of government operations, allowing citizens to complete procedures before deadlines rather than responding to reminders after documents near expiration.

Officials believe the expanded renewal window will improve customer satisfaction by giving people greater flexibility while reducing waiting times and congestion during peak application periods.

Supporting the Zero Government Bureaucracy Programme

The new policy also contributes to the UAE’s Zero Government Bureaucracy Programme, which aims to simplify government procedures, eliminate unnecessary administrative steps and improve service delivery across public institutions.

The programme encourages government entities to redesign services around customer needs, shorten transaction times and increase the use of integrated digital systems.

According to the ICP, extending the Emirates ID renewal period and introducing combined passport and ID renewals are practical examples of these reforms in action. By reducing duplicate procedures and allowing multiple services to be completed simultaneously, the authority hopes to create a faster and more seamless experience for citizens.

The programme also seeks to strengthen coordination between government entities while improving operational efficiency and reducing administrative costs.

Leadership’s Vision for Proactive Government Services

Major General Suhail Saeed Al Khaili, Director General of the ICP, said the new initiative reflects the directives of the UAE leadership to provide proactive government services that anticipate citizens’ needs rather than requiring them to initiate every administrative process.

He said the authority remains committed to developing innovative digital services that improve customer satisfaction while maintaining high standards of efficiency and accessibility.

According to Al Khaili, investing in technology-driven services enables the ICP to deliver faster, smarter and more integrated solutions that support the country’s vision of becoming a global leader in digital government.

He added that the authority will continue introducing initiatives that simplify official procedures while enhancing the quality of services available to UAE nationals.

Benefits for UAE Nationals

The Emirates ID is the primary identity document for UAE citizens and residents and is required for accessing a wide range of essential services, including banking, healthcare, education, telecommunications and government transactions.

Keeping the card valid is important for ensuring uninterrupted access to these services. The ability to renew documents up to one year before expiry provides citizens with greater convenience and flexibility while reducing the possibility of disruptions caused by expired identification.

The ICP has encouraged eligible UAE nationals to take advantage of the expanded renewal period through its digital service platforms, allowing applications to be submitted quickly and conveniently without waiting until the final months before expiry.

Officials believe the latest reforms will make document management easier for thousands of citizens while reinforcing the UAE’s reputation as a leader in smart government and customer-focused public services. By extending the renewal window, integrating passport and Emirates ID renewals, and continuing to invest in digital transformation, the ICP aims to deliver a more efficient, seamless and citizen-centric government experience.
