UAE Flag Day 2026: What Happens Today and How You Can Join In

UAE Flag Day 2026: Events, History and Flag Rules

Flags go up at 11am in all seven emirates and there are loads of ways to celebrate, even on a fairly ordinary working day.

If you look out of any window in the UAE at the moment you’ll probably see a lot more red, green, white and black than normal. Flag Day UAE 2026 is on Tuesday 3rd November and the whole country is being invited to hoist the national flag at 11am. It’s not a public holiday so offices and schools will be open as normal. There will be a good spread of events throughout the day though.

Why 3 November?

The date is the anniversary of the late Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s accession as President of the UAE in 2004. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum instituted Flag Day in 2013 and so UAE Flag Day 2026 will be the 14th anniversary of the day. Sheikh Mohammed has described it as “a national occasion of love, pride and loyalty to the UAE”. The UAE Government Media Office has described it as a day of national unity.

How to Take Part

Participation is simple. Citizens, residents, government bodies, schools and universities are all invited to hoist the flag at 11am. At home you can do it on your balcony, your villa, or in your car. Offices can do it at the entrance or in the lobby. The whole point of UAE Flag Day 2026 is to all get together and do it at the same time.

Where to Celebrate

If you want something bigger, Gulf News lists a few options:

  • UAE Flag Day 2026 at Global Village: there’s a drone show scheduled for 8pm on the Main Stage and the park is open from 4pm to midnight. As always, check the park website for ticketing and entry rules (Tuesdays are Ladies & Families day).
  • UAE Flag Day 2026 at the UAE Flag Garden (on Umm Suqeim Beach next to Burj Al Arab) will see over 11,000 flags forming portraits of the Founding Fathers. Free entry and the garden will be open until January.

Drone numbers for Global Village are different in the various reports so I haven’t quoted one of those.

A Quick Look at the Flag

The flag was first hoisted on 2 December 1971 by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan at the time of the Federation’s declaration. It was designed by Abdullah Mohammed Al Maeena whose entry was the winning entry in a competition which had been advertised in Al Ittihad. The design is a vertical red band by the pole with green, white and black horizontal bands to the side of it. The official UAE Flag Guidebook states that red is for the founding generation and the nation’s martyrs, green is for growth and prosperity, white is for charity and peace and black is for strength and resilience. All of that makes UAE Flag Day 2026 rather significant.

Flag Etiquette in Brief

Displaying the flag comes with a few simple rules:

  • Keep your UAE Flag Day 2026 flag clean and pressed and replace it if it’s torn or faded.
  • Never let the flag touch the ground when hoisting it or lowering it.
  • Don’t add any logos or decoration and don’t print the flag on any disposable items, nor use it on food such as cakes.
  • It is a criminal offence to insult or damage the flag under Federal Decree-Law No. 13 of 2019.

What Comes Next

Flag Day also kicks off a month of celebrations which culminates in Eid Al Etihad (the UAE’s National Day) on Wednesday 2 December. So think of UAE Flag Day 2026 as the opening act. It’s a simple way to be part of a shared moment regardless of whether you’re raising a flag at 11am, catching the drone show or just popping down to the Flag Garden.
