In a small yet significant change to the daily commute of motorists in Abu Dhabi, the authorities have renamed four Darb toll gates to be more in line with what they are, to make navigation in Abu Dhabi easier and more intuitive.

The new names, Sheikh Zayed Bridge, Sheikh Khalifa Bridge, Al Maqtaa Bridge, and Mussafah Bridge, are now more reflective of the major landmarks. They oppose the previously used system of naming, which was less evident, particularly when using navigation applications.

Making every day driving easier

To most of the residents, and those who are new to the city, it has not been easy to identify the toll gates. With the ability to connect the toll points to popular bridges and routes, the authorities are optimistic about eliminating that uncertainty.

This has to be done with clarity, an observer of the transport remarked. The immediate association of a toll gate with a physical landmark by drivers means that there is less hesitation, and general traffic flow is enhanced.

Delivery services, ride-hailing drivers and emergency responders are also likely to benefit, as they need accurate location information.

What stays the same

While the names have changed, the way the Darb system works has not.

Drivers will still pay Dh4 at times of peak traffic on weekdays, whereas tolls will be free during off-peak traffic times, Fridays, weekends, and during public holidays.

The road users have been reminded to ensure that they maintain their Darb accounts, which they keep topped up to avoid paying fines, particularly when the number of road users is high due to a surge in traffic during peak hours.

Reflected across apps and signage

The new names are already being updated on the navigation platforms, and the drivers can adapt with the new names without significant inconvenience.

On the road, new signage is being implemented to reflect the changes, so there is uniformity between what drivers on the road and their screens see.

According to officials, these modifications are included in the process of keeping up with the fast-paced development of the emirate, where infrastructure is constantly developing with the growing communities.

A small change with wider impact

The renaming may be considered insignificant, yet it is a step in the bigger process of Abu Dhabi becoming smarter and easier to get around in.

Naming will reduce confusion, reduce last-minute lane changing, and aid in maintaining the traffic flowing smoothly, particularly during rush hours.

With the city ever expanding, these refinements are becoming even more crucial in the development of a road network that will cater well to both the residents and visiting businesses and other people.
