23 May 2025, India: The sudden increase in COVID-19 cases in India has now become a matter of serious concern. Especially in states like Kerala and Maharashtra, the most new cases are coming up, causing an atmosphere of restlessness and nervousness among the common people. Once again, there is a fear of an epidemic in the minds of people. Vigilance has been increased in hospitals, and governments have come into alert mode. Everyone wants to know what will happen next, and we will have to take precautions like before again.
According to the health department of Kerala, some districts of the state, such as Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Thiruvananthapuram, are seeing a rapid increase in cases of infection. These growing figures every day are giving clear indications that we need to be alert and vigilant once again. This situation is reminding us that even though the epidemic is not as serious as before, negligence may occur. The precaution is our biggest security at this time.

At the same time, Mumbai has the highest number of cases in Maharashtra, and two deaths from COVID have also been confirmed. Governments of both states have become alert, and wearing masks in public places, especially hospitals, has been made mandatory again. Given this increasing threat, health experts say that this is the time to increase awareness and re-adapt covid security measures.
India Covid Surge: Breakdown by State
In India, there is a mild but worrying bounce in the cases of COVID-19 once again. Kerala and Maharashtra are currently among the most affected states, but apart from these, new cases of infection have also come up in many other states of the country.
Kerala has so far registered 182 new COVID-19 cases, which are the highest in the entire country. Talking about the districts, 57 cases have been reported in Kottayam, 34 in Ernakulam, and 30 in Thiruvananthapuram. The state government has further strengthened monitoring and tracking, and appealed to ordinary citizens to be careful.
Maharashtra has confirmed 106 COVID-19 cases since January, out of which 95 cases have been registered only in Mumbai. Two COVID-19-related deaths have also been confirmed, both patients were suffering from a serious co-morbidity. The Mumbai Metropolitan Municipality (BMC) has reactivated COVID facilities in all city hospitals to handle the situation.

Apart from these two states, reports of sporadic cases are also being received in states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Delhi, and West Bengal. Although the number is still low in these states, the governments have become alert and monitoring has been increased. The monitoring of the airport in Delhi and Karnataka has been tightened and sample testing is being increased.
As of May 19, a total of 257 active COVID-19 cases have been registered in India, in which the condition of all the patients has been reported to be light. So far, no hospitalization or death has been reported due to the increase in this new infection, which is a positive sign.
JN.1 Variant’s Role in India’s Latest Wave
JN.1 Sub-Variant, which is a form of Pirola Strain (BA.2.86), is playing a major role in increasing new COVID-19 cases in many countries of Asia, including India. This variant is considered more contagious than before and can also evade the body’s immune system. However, its symptoms are similar to other forms of Omicron; that is, in most cases, it remains mild. Apart from this, other variants such as LF.7 and NB 1.8 are also being monitored, which are currently being considered due to mild infections. Therefore, experts are focusing on how the virus is changing, so that we can get the right information in time, and the measures for safety also remain effective.
Is It Safe to Visit India From The UAE?
The journey from the UAE to India is still considered completely safe, because at the moment neither a special journey ban has been announced nor any travel alert has been issued regarding any new variants. Health agencies of the two countries are monitoring with full vigilance, and international health guidelines are being followed, so that the movement of passengers can continue without any hassle and danger.

Nevertheless, passengers are advised to continuously take up health-related updates, wear masks in crowded places, and read the related health advisory before the journey. As the virus is changing its form, we can make safe international travel possible only by vigilance and awareness-especially the journeys between the UAE and India, remain completely careful and safe.
