UAE Credit Card Payment Penalties
Ways to avoid UAE Credit Card Payment Penalties

October 15, 2025, Dubai, UAE: Many people first encounter UAE credit card payment penalties as a simple late fee when a monthly installment is missed. Banks typically send reminders and levy small penalties if you’re late by a few days. However, under Article 4(4) of the Personal Loan Agreement approved by UAE Central Bank, missing three consecutive or six non-consecutive payments is considered a default, this dramatically changes the situation, moving you from basic penalties to the legal territory of debt default. UAE credit card payment penalties get much tougher at this stage.

From Penalties to Default: What Changes

A default means the entire outstanding balance on your credit card becomes due immediately, not just the missed payments. UAE credit card payment penalties accelerate here, as banks no longer need a court order or further notice to demand payment in full. Many credit card holders are surprised when a previously manageable debt suddenly becomes unmanageable overnight.

Credit cards in the UAE are treated as personal loan facilities. When you sign for a card, you usually provide a security cheque for your credit card limit. If you default, that cheque can be deposited. If it bounces, the bank may pursue a criminal or civil case, and UAE credit card payment penalties will now include legal fees and possibly criminal charges for bounced cheques.

Legal Consequences: Travel Bans and More

A major turning point for UAE credit card payment penalties is when the outstanding amount exceeds Dh10,000. At this threshold, the bank can request a travel ban using Article 324 of Federal Decree-Law No. 42 of 2022. The court then decides if the debt is “serious and due,” and can restrict your ability to leave the country. The travel ban persists until the debt is settled, extended, or otherwise legally resolved.

The process isn’t instant, a travel ban is only issued after a court examines evidence submitted by the bank, but UAE credit card payment penalties can mean months of uncertainty, blocked travel, and disruption to your life.

Escalating Penalties: Late Fees, Interest, and Credit Score

UAE credit card payment penalties begin with late fees that range from AED 150 to AED 500. If you continue missing payments, the bank will often increase the interest rate on overdue balances (“penalty APR”), making your debt even harder to pay off. Over weeks or months, these growing UAE credit card payment penalties can take a toll on your credit score. The Al Etihad Credit Bureau tracks all missed payments each slip reduces your score, making future loans, mortgages, or cards much harder to obtain.

Security Cheques and Bounced Cheque Penalties

Most banks collect security cheques upfront for the credit card limit. If you default, the bank will deposit this cheque. If you don’t have enough funds, a bounced cheque penalty is imposed. Depending on the amount, fines can range from AED 2,000 to AED 10,000, and the case may lead to civil or even criminal action. UAE credit card payment penalties connected to bounced cheques carry heavy consequences, even including jail time.

communicate openly with your bank. Banks are often willing to discuss payment plans, waive some penalties, or restructure loans to make repayment possible. If legal action is already underway, acting immediately can help limit these UAE credit card payment penalties.

If your debt is very large in amount and you cannot pay, insolvency proceedings under UAE law may be an option, but always seek any legal advice before pursuing this route.

How Bans Over Travel Can Be Lifted

A travel ban resulting from UAE credit card payment penalties is lifted if:

  • The bank issues written agreement to cancel it
  • You pay or deposit the full debt with the court
  • You provide a valid bank guarantee or approved guarantor
  • The bank fails to pursue the case within required timeframes
  • Three years pass without further enforcement
  • Authorities confirm you are to be deported due to an illegal UAE stay
