The festival is organised by the Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority under the esteemed patronage of His Highness. It is placed as one of the UAE’s leading celebrations of agriculture and heritage. The Liwa Date Festival reflects the Authority’s focused dedication to preserving and honouring the nation’s rich farming legacy and deeply rooted cultural traditions.
Liwa Date Festival And How It Began
The Liwa Date Festival was first hosted in 2005 and has now become one of the UAE’s most culturally and economically significant events. It is held once every year to celebrate the long-standing Emirati traditions surrounding the date palm, while also serving as a stage for the preservation and promotion of the UAE’s rich heritage.

The Liwa Date festival showcases traditional farming methods, includes various engagements such as story telling crafts, and explains the vital role of the date palm in the country’s identity. The Liwa Date Festival is also a contributor to the local economy by supporting local farmers, artisans, and entrepreneurs. It gives them a platform to market their date-based products and handmade crafts. It is a community event that brings together families, craftsmen, and different generations in a shared space, attracting both locals and tourists from afar.
Visit Of Honourable Deputy Prime Minister
During his visit, His Highness toured various pavilions set up by government and private participants where he explored their contributions and innovations in the agricultural field. He was briefed on the festival’s competitions and activities, which focus on the role of date palm in promoting food security and sustainable agriculture. Sheikh Mansour credited the visible progress in the UAE’s agriculture and food production sectors to the vision and support of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, who is committed to the growth of farmers and a resilient food security system.
The Liwa Date Festival features various engaging competitions and activities that display the UAE’s heritage with total prizes exceeding AED 8.7 million. These engagements aim to preserve the legacy and status of the palm tree as a blessing from the past that continues to nurture the UAE throughout time.

The festival gives a platform to farmers and local communities in the region through the traditional market, which includes stalls for selling fresh varieties of dates and date products, palm-related items, and other local goods. It also includes pavilions of participating sponsors and supporters.
Significance Of Palm Trees In UAE Culture
Through the centuries, the palm tree has stood as a powerful symbol of Emirati heritage, deeply rooted in the UAE’s cultural and agricultural identity. Historically, the tree was a haven for generations surviving in harsh desert environments; it provided essential resources like food, shelter, and income. Today, it continues to hold economic and cultural importance, as dates are a staple part of local diets and traditions. The palm tree also plays a central role in national efforts toward food security and sustainable agriculture, placing it as an icon of the UAE’s development. It is often featured in logos of various organisations, businesses, or even locations such as Jumeirah Islands.

The Liwa Date Festival is open to everyone from tourists to children. The festival features an engaging mix of activities, including traditional Emirati music, folk dances, poetry, and cultural performances. Kids have a dedicated Children’s Village to enjoy storytelling, crafts, workshops, and heritage games, while adults explore exhibitions, date competitions, and artisanal markets. The festival creates an incredible family-friendly atmosphere to celebrate the UAE’s historic agricultural traditions while promoting community spirit and sustainable living.
