The alert emphasizes that scanning the rejected QR code can stolen personal information like password, bank card details and other sensitive data. Residents and visitors should be cautious when scanning the QR code in public areas to avoid being victims of these scams.

Dubai Municipality advises that before scanning any QR code, people should always check whether the link starts with “https: //” that indicates a safe website. It is also not important to enter the password or bank information on the websites opened through the QR code until the safety of the site is confirmed.

To help the public stay safe, Dubai Municipality shared 11 essential rules to avoid QR code scams. Following these rules can protect personal data and prevent falling prey to fraudsters:

  • Avoid scanning the QR code displayed in walls, poles or public places until it is verified.
  • Never enter individual or financial information on the sites reached through the rejected QR code.
  • Use QR code scanning apps that have safety facilities.
  • Do not scan the code obtained through unwanted messages or emails.
  • Be cautious with those codes that lead to the websites requesting unexpectedly sensitive details.
  • For signs of stickers tampering, such as several layers of QR code at one place.
  • Report any suspected QR code or scam to local authorities immediately.
  • Keep your phone and antivirus software updated for better safety.
  • Educate family and friends about these risks and encourage safe scanning habits.
