November 19, 2025 | Dubai, UAE: Emirates has made one of the biggest announcements about the Starlink WiFi in the Emirates when it comes to in-flight connectivity. It stated that it plans to unleash free Starlink WiFi in the Emirates on all its flights beginning with its wide-body fleet and implementing a full rollout across its entire service by mid-2027.

Its implementation is already going on: the first aircraft to have Starlink WiFi in the Emirates enabled is the Boeing 777-300ER (registration A6-EPF), which was displayed at the Dubai Airshow.  The airline will then fit its fleet of 232 in-service aircraft within a period of about 2 years.

A Revolution of Introducing Starlink WiFi in the Emirates

This initiative of introducing Starlink WiFi in the Emirates is an assurance of a change of step in what travellers expect when they are flying. According to Emirates, the Starlink WiFi service will be complimentary to all customers, regardless of the cabin, on any aircraft that has the system installed. It will allow passengers to access it in one-click login, i.e. no fee, no loyalty-programme membership needed.

Notably, the service is advertised to provide ground-quality internet connection at cruising altitude, i.e. passengers can stream, game, browse social networks, make video calls and work, at the same time on their seat-back screens or devices.

The schedule of rollout and the fleet specifications.

Emirates is ambitious in the rate of installation. The airline expects to install the Starlink WiFi in Emirates around 14 airplanes monthly, starting in November 2025 with the Boeing 777 fleet. The fleet of Airbus A380 (still operated by Emirates in considerable quantities) will start getting installed in February 2026. All the in-service aircrafts should be equipped by mid 2027.

The targeted number of 232 aircraft in service means that Emirates is one of the first large global airlines to invest in the free and high-speed satellite WiFi onboard on that scale.

A Revolution of Introducing Starlink WiFi in the Emirates

Strategic significance of the Starlink WiFi in the Emirates

In the case of Emirates, the move to collaborate with Starlink is an indication that connectivity is no longer a nice-to-have in air travel, but it is rapidly becoming a must-have. With the inflight internet being a strong competitive edge, airlines worldwide are scrambling to create a competitive edge via service, comfort and innovation.

In its press release, the President of Emirates Tim Clark pointed out that Starlink was one of a suite of strategies to remodel its cabin such as new and renovated Premium Economy, Business and First-Class cabins, improved entertainment systems and now what he claimed to be industry-leading connectivity.  On the provider side, the vice-president of SpaceX (the company owning Starlink) Chad Gibbs emphasized that the system will provide video calls of the same quality as on the ground the passengers of Emirates flights could have.

Broader trend in aviation

Emirates is not alone. According to the article, Starlink WiFi in the Emirates is also being implemented by airlines in Saudi Arabia and Qatar. As an example, Qatar Airways has installed over 100 wide-body cars with Starlink WiFi, claiming it to be the fastest Wi-Fi in the world. This implies that it is more of a cultural change: high-speed, global connectivity by satellite in the air is now the new reality, not the exception.

Although the promise is too strong, there are some caveats. To begin, the free Starlink WiFi in the Emirates can only be used on the planes after installation, therefore until the rollout ends some flights might continue not using the new service. Secondly, free in this case means free to access it, the airline can have usage policies (speed limits, usage tracking, etc) but none of them is explained in the article. Thirdly, newer or premium aircraft types (e.g., 777-300ER, A380) are installed first thus the older aircrafts or regional services might be upgraded at a later time.

The Starlink WiFi in the Emirates

Coming with the news of the free Starlink WiFi in Emirates flights, the airline bares a new standard in inflight connectivity. To travellers, who are flying with Emirates, this translates to increased freedom of staying in touch, working or entertaining aboard the aircraft as not a luxury but a normalcy. In the case of the airline industry, it is an indication that onboard internet is not a value addition anymore but it is a service expectation.

With the fleet-wide rollout that Emirates has been undertaking, passengers around the globe will receive the so-called ground-quality internet at a cruising altitude of the airline.
