UAE January 20th, 2026: The United Arab Emirates (UAE), has denied with categorical force that it is secretly running a series of secret prisons and detention centers in Hadramout province in eastern Yemen in a very strong counterargument to the accusations put forward by Yemeni officials. The issue has attracted the attention of the international community and it has further worsened the diplomatic relations within the region.

Background: Yemeni Officials Accuse

On January 19, 2026, the governor of Yemen, Salem Al-Khanbashi, published allegations in a televised press conference that the UAE was operating secret prisons in the port city of Mukalla, in the Riyan airbase. The purport was given when the Saudi government organized a media visit to the location by inviting foreign media reporters.

Al-Khanbashi reported that the government of Yemen was going to initiate legal proceedings against the perpetrators of such alleged violations, suggesting, however, not only the UAE, but also the local separatist chiefs who were members of the Southern Transitional Council (STC).

Background Of Local Conflicts

These allegations are against a broader conflict between Riyadh and Abu Dhabi that has been increasing in recent months. The two Gulf allies have exchanged mutual jabs on the military roles and influence in Yemen and the disputes cut across various fronts other than the secret prisons allegations.

UAE’s Official Response

Denial, by the Ministry of Defence.

The UAE Ministry of Defence acted promptly and declared the accusations as purposeful misinformation and fake news. The ministry statement denied the presence of secret prisons and detention centres and termed the allegations as not having credible evidence or factual background.

The UAE responded that the installations mentioned in the reports were conventional military installations – accommodation and fortified shelters typical of military installations, not underground prisons.

Withdrawal From Yemen

The UAE, in its own turn, also noted that it had withdrawn its troops out of Yemen on January 2, 2026, handing over equipment and assets in accordance with the established procedures, leaving no more military presence in the country.

According to the Defence Ministry, the allegations of secret prisons constituted a politically oriented campaign to derail the reputation of the UAE and disregard the decade-long work in Yemen’s security environment.

The International And Human Rights Perspectives

The accusations of undisclosed secret prisons in Yemen are not completely novel. The use of secret prisons supported by foreign troops such as UAE and allied militants has also been reported previously by human rights groups and activists as the suspects might have been held without facing normal judicial system.

Such reports are, however, frequently based on testimonies, and were in part recorded years ago during the most arduous years of the Yemeni war, which is not directly associated with the most recent government utterance.

The independent investigations called in the past by human rights networks on the allegations of abuses in Yemen has raised the need to ensure transparency and accountability in areas where claims of secret detention and mistreatment are presented.

Political Implications

Tense Relations with Saudi-supported Governments. The new charges are a break in a long history of conflicts between partners in the current Saudi-UAE influence game. These declarations by the Yemeni government with Riyadh support are an indication of increasing diplomatic division with potentially broader implications on the coalition politics in the Middle East.

The controversy surrounding secret prisons and the involvement of the military as a whole by foreign nations in Yemen highlights the weak position of sovereignty and institutional standing of the Yemeni state. Such disputes are perceived by both domestic and international observers to have an impact on peace and reconstruction efforts.

The Aftermath Of the Secret Prisons Accusations

The refusal of the UAE to accept the accusations that it operated secret prisons facilities in the province of Hadramout in Yemen has sparked discussions, highlighting the nature of intricate geopolitical issues and underlying human rights problems. Although the accusations are disregarded because of the insufficient basis in Abu Dhabi, the situation is still closely observed by the regional dynamics and global institutions. The changing storyline emphasizes the persistent difficulties of post-conflict Yemen and the contradictions of geopolitics affecting its future.
