Dubai, August 22, 2025: This back-to-school season always brings excitement and a bit of stress as well. Parents juggle uniforms, stationery shopping, lunchboxes, and the nerves of getting little ones settled back into routine. Now, the UAE government has stepped in with a thoughtful solution. For the first time, UAE flexible work hours for parents of public school children will be introduced, giving mums and dads the breathing room they need during this busy time.

The Federal Authority for Government Human Resources (FAHR) announced the policy as part of its Back to School initiatives. For many families, this feels like a real game changer, making the first days of school less overwhelming and a lot more manageable.

Why This Matters for Parents?

We’ve all seen that first-day scene, parents rushing to drop their kids while glancing nervously at the clock, trying to get to the office on time. Under the new UAE flexible work hours for parents rule, federal employees can now adjust their workday by up to three hours.

That means no more speeding through school gates or worrying about being late to morning meetings. Parents can choose to arrive later, leave earlier, or even split those hours across the day to make school drop-offs and pick-ups smoother.

Extra Support for the Little Ones

For parents of nursery and kindergarten children, the government has gone one step further. Instead of just the first day, UAE flexible work hours for parents will apply for the entire first week.

Anyone who has walked a crying toddler into their new classroom knows how emotional that first week can be. Having extra time off work allows parents to ease their children into the new routine and themselves too without the added pressure of office deadlines.

Not Just About Day One

This isn’t a one-time favour. The UAE flexible work hours for parents policy will continue throughout the school year. Parents can use up to three hours of leave to attend important milestones such as parent-teacher meetings, graduation ceremonies, or special school events.

It’s a recognition that a child’s growth doesn’t happen in one day and parents should have the opportunity to be present when it matters most.

What makes this policy even more thoughtful is that it considers the UAE’s diverse education system. With children enrolled in different curricula, schools don’t all start on the same date. The UAE flexible work hours for parents rule asks employers in federal entities to take this into account, ensuring no family is left out simply because their school follows a different schedule.

The balance is clear: families get flexibility without compromising the efficiency of the workplace. It’s about trust, trusting employees to manage both their roles as parents and as professionals.

Who Can Benefit?

At present, UAE flexible work hours for parents apply only to government employees. Private sector workers are not included, though many families hope the idea will inspire companies across the UAE to adopt similar measures.

Considering that over 387,000 children attend private schools in Dubai alone, expanding this policy would impact a huge portion of the population. For now, it’s a positive step in the right direction.

At its heart, the UAE flexible work hours for parents initiative sends a simple but powerful message: family comes first. By supporting parents during school drop-offs, graduations, or even quick meetings with teachers, the government is showing that raising the next generation is just as important as day-to-day office tasks.

For children, it means seeing their parents present and involved. For parents, it removes the guilt of choosing between work and family. And for employers, it sets an example that flexibility can strengthen, not weaken, productivity.
