April 25, 2025, Abu Dhabi, UAE- The UAE Ministry of Education has announced a significant update to the country’s education system. Under the new rule, popularly known as the UAE New Education Rule, students in both public and private schools will be allowed to choose and study the subjects of their choice freely. The main objective of this regulation is to enable students to become better future selves aligned with what the universities and job markets ask for.

What is the UAE New Education Rule?

Cycle 3 (higher grades) in public and private schools that adopt the Ministry’s curriculum by the academic year 2025-2026 will be marked by the UAE New Education Law, which has assigned new categories to educational streams. Further, the Ministry has remodelled general and advanced streams, which streamline the pupils’ ambitions and help them succeed in higher education and future careers.

  • As said, the UAE New Education Rule modifies the subjects, options for the pupils, and most importantly, the avenue for such pupils intending to join a university.
  • In the general stream, students will study basic sciences as foundation subjects to develop important skills and talents. This stream is mainly for students pursuing academic professions such as humanities, business administration, law, arts, social sciences, and police sciences.
  • The advanced stream on the other side will include deeper scientific subjects to prepare students for sciences, engineering, medicine, and pharmacy.
  • Grade 12 general stream students will have the option to substitute physics with other subjects listed in the Ministry Guidance Manual.
  • The UAE New Education Rule will apply to students currently in Grades 11 and 12; it will not in any way affect their academic plans.
  • Grade 8 students will need to choose their stream based on their university goals. The ministry has developed specific rules and conditions for joining the advanced stream.
