Mexico vs Serbia result

Mexico crushed Serbia 5-1 at Estadio Nemesio Díez on Thursday night. Johan Vásquez scored the equalizer and anchored the defense to win Man of the Match. Raúl Jiménez and Luis Chávez also got on the scoresheet. The result gives El Tri huge momentum ahead of their 2026 World Cup opener against South Africa on June 11.

First Half Summary

Mexico started with intent. They held 69% possession and pushed high from the first whistle. But Serbia struck first against the run of play. In the 19th minute Petar Stanić pounced on a heavy ricochet. Jesús Gallardo and the defense got mixed up and Stanić slotted low past the keeper. 1-0 Serbia.

Serbia sat deep in a 4-2-3-1 block and looked to hit on the counter. Mexico kept the tempo high and kept probing. The breakthrough came in the 34th minute. Brian Gutiérrez swung in a brilliant cross and Vásquez rose highest to head home. 1-1.

The real shift happened right at halftime. In 45+2 Stefan Bukinac tried to clear and deflected the ball into his own net. Mexico took a lead they did not deserve based on play, but the timing killed Serbia’s confidence.

Turning Point

Bukinac’s own goal was the turning point. Serbia defended well for 45 minutes. Then one unlucky touch changed everything. They lost structure after the break and Mexico smelled blood.

Goals and Key Moments

19’ – Stanić scores after a defensive error. Serbia 1-0

34’ – Vásquez heads in from Gutiérrez cross. 1-1

45+2 – Bukinac own goal. Mexico 2-1

57’ – Jiménez finishes Alvarado cross with left foot. 3-1

72’ – Avdić adds second own goal for Serbia. 4-1

90’ – Chávez smashes a long range rocket into the bottom corner. 5-1

Mexico vs Serbia: Player Performance

Man of the match: Johan Vásquez. He scored the equalizer and cleaned up at the back all night. Solid leadership.

Best performer: Raúl Jiménez. He looked sharp and finished clinically in the second half.

Weak link: Stefan Bukinac. The Serbia defender struggled against Mexico’s wingers and the own goal before being subbed hurt him.

What It Means

The Mexico vs Serbia result does not change any table. This was friendly. But the 5-1 scoreline builds belief. Mexico now head into the 48-team World Cup on home soil with form and confidence. El Tri face South Africa next on June 11.

For Serbia, this was about testing depth. They did not qualify for 2026 and used a younger experimental squad. Coach Radovan Ćurčić admitted individual errors cost them. They will take lessons into future qualifiers.
