The 1 Billion Followers Summit returns for its fifth edition in January 2027, and this time it arrives with a million dollar AI film prize, Instagram’s first ever creator day and a question that every content creator in the region needs to answer.

Dubai, UAE, September 30, 2026.

There is a moment in every industry when it stops being a trend and starts being an economy. For content creation, that moment has already passed. The question now is not whether the creator economy is real. It is who controls it, who profits from it and who gets left behind.

The 1 Billion Followers Summit has spent five years trying to make sure the answer to that last question is nobody.

The world’s largest gathering dedicated to the creator economy returns to Dubai from January 8th to 10th, 2027, held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The fifth edition will take place across Jumeirah Emirates Towers, the Dubai International Financial Centre and the Museum of the Future, under a theme that says exactly what it intends: Content for Good.

The Numbers Have Become Almost Absurd

When the 1 Billion Followers Summit launched its first edition, the combined following of its speakers sat at roughly one billion. That figure has since quadrupled.

The fifth edition will bring together more than 400 speakers whose audiences collectively exceed four billion people. To put that in perspective, four billion is roughly half the population of the planet. The voices gathering in Dubai in January will, between them, have direct communication lines to more human beings than any government, broadcaster or media organisation in history.

Creators HQ, the UAE’s dedicated hub for content creators, currently counts 5,000 registered members from 130 countries with a combined audience exceeding five billion followers. There are 15,000 licensed content creators operating in the UAE representing over 90 nationalities. The UAE has invested Dh150 million through its Content Creators Support Fund and announced a separate Dh50 million Creators Ventures Accelerator.

These are not vanity statistics. They are the infrastructure of an industry that the UAE has spent years deliberately building toward.

A Million Dollar Reason to Make Something Extraordinary

The headline initiative returning for the fifth edition is the AI Film Award, the largest of its kind anywhere in the world, carrying a prize of one million US dollars.

The award, held in partnership with BytePlus, the enterprise technology arm of ByteDance, is built around seven themes that cover some of the most compelling territory in human storytelling. Science and discovery. Lost and forgotten civilisations. Cultural traditions. Moments in history where one decision changed everything. Stories of invention, exploration and human ingenuity.

The creative tool available to participants is Dreamina Seedance, ByteDance’s AI video generation model, which gives filmmakers access to multimodal video creation capabilities that simply did not exist even a few years ago. The previous edition of the award drew more than 30,000 entries from 116 countries. The winner, director Zoubeir Jlassi, took top honours for a film called Lily.

TikTok joins the initiative for this edition, expanding its reach to a global audience that was already paying attention.

Alongside the AI Film Award, TikTok is bringing the hashtag 1MillionStories competition to the summit, inviting people around the world to share the single piece of content, a film or series, that genuinely changed their life. The winning video receives 100,000 US dollars. Entries are judged on creativity, impact, storytelling and reach.

Two competitions. Over a million dollars in prizes. Both asking the same underlying question: what does great content actually do to the people who watch it?

What Is New at the Fifth Edition?

The 1 Billion Followers Summit has always grown between editions, and the fifth is no different.

Instagram Creators Day makes its debut at the summit this year, a full day curated entirely by Instagram, bringing together top creators, the Instagram team and industry leaders for sessions focused on what is reshaping content right now. Community building, sustainable creator businesses, cultural impact and the next generation of standout content are all on the agenda.

The Creators Market returns for its second edition, dedicating an entire pavilion to 100 creator-led small and medium-sized enterprises. This is one of the summit’s most practically significant features. The creator economy is no longer just about individual posts reaching large audiences. It is about creators building companies, launching products and establishing brands that outlast any single piece of content. The Creators Market gives those businesses a platform and potential investors a direct line to them.

A Creators Brand Village, organised in partnership with Alfan, will provide a dedicated space where creators can connect with brands and generate revenue directly during the event itself.

For the first time, creator wellbeing will receive dedicated programming. Psychologists and specialists will lead sessions examining the pressures facing creators as the industry evolves, including the psychological weight of constant content production and the changing expectations that come with building a public-facing career online. It is a recognition that behind every large following is a human being navigating challenges that most career guidance never prepared anyone for.

Major platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Meta, YouTube, OpenAI, LinkedIn, Google, X, Snapchat and bilibili will all maintain dedicated spaces at the summit, hosting workshops and panels that give creators direct access to the teams shaping the platforms they build on.

Why the UAE Keeps Doing This?

Saeed Al Eter, Chairman of the UAE Government Media Office and CEO of the 1 Billion Followers Summit, put the philosophy simply. Content has evolved into an industry that creates opportunities for young people, opens new markets for businesses and shapes how the world communicates, learns and trades.

The UAE’s decision to invest billions of dirhams into creator infrastructure, to build Creators HQ, to launch the 1 Billion Followers Summit and to grow it to the scale it has reached is not a cultural initiative wrapped in government branding. It is a deliberate economic strategy built on the recognition that the creator economy is one of the fastest growing sectors in the world and that the countries that build the infrastructure for it today will shape it for decades.

Alia Al Hammadi, Vice Chairperson of the UAE Government Media Office and Deputy CEO of the summit, described the fifth edition’s extended agenda as a reflection of the summit’s commitment to empowering creators across tools, investment and reach. The summit is not just theoretical, she noted. It is practical. Workshops, one-on-one connections, business deals, investment conversations and career-changing encounters happen on the floor, not just on the stage.

The 1 Billion Followers Summit takes place January 8th to 10th, 2027 across Emirates Towers, DIFC and the Museum of the Future in Dubai.

Times of Dubai will bring you a closer look at what the summit means for content creators in the region, with more coverage and creator conversations coming soon.
