Dubai’s traffic enforcement covers more than speeding. Drivers also need to pay attention to signals, seatbelts, mobile-phone use and lane discipline. This guide explains eight common mistakes and where to check the official penalty for a recorded offence.
What smart cameras can detect
Dubai Police’s published explanation of its smart radar describes detection of handheld-phone use, missing seatbelts, lane-discipline breaches and sudden deviation. It does not establish that every camera detects every possible offence in all conditions.
Eight traffic mistakes to avoid
1. Speeding
Observe the posted limit. The penalty depends on how far the vehicle exceeds it; serious speeding can also involve black points and impoundment. Do not assume one fine applies to every speed violation.
2. Crossing a red light
The official federal schedule lists AED 1,000, 12 black points and 30 days of impoundment for a light vehicle crossing a red light. Separate local release requirements may apply; the base fine is not necessarily the total cost.
3. Using a phone while driving
Using a mobile phone or being distracted while driving is listed at AED 800 and four black points. Set your route before moving and stop safely before handling your phone.
4. Tailgating
Failure to leave a safe following distance is listed at AED 400 and four black points. Leave room to react, especially when visibility or road conditions deteriorate.
5. Not fastening a seatbelt
The schedule lists AED 400 for seatbelt violations and four black points for the driver’s seatbelt offence. Check that passengers are buckled up before setting off.
6. Unsafe lane changes
Sudden deviation is a separate offence from other lane-discipline breaches. Check mirrors and blind spots, indicate, and move only when it is safe. Do not treat all lane violations as a single penalty category.
7. Excessive window tinting
Tinting beyond the permitted limit is an offence. Confirm applicable requirements before modifying a vehicle; a camera’s claimed ability to see through tint is not a substitute for the rules.
8. Driving against traffic
Driving against the traffic direction is listed at AED 600, four black points and seven days of impoundment for light vehicles. Follow road signs and use the next lawful turning point if you miss your route.
