August 11, 2025 | Gaza- On August 10, 2025, in Gaza City, the world lost a courageous voice of truth as the death of Al Jazeera journalist Anas Al Sharif in an Israeli air strike near Al-Shifa Hospital. At just 28 years old, Al Sharif was one of the five Al-Jazeera staff members killed during this targeted attack on a press tent. Known for her fearless frontline reporting, Anas Al Sharif brought the destructive realities of the Gaza struggle globally.

Life Dedicated to Truth and Courage

Anas Al Sharif began his journey as a journalist with a clear mission: to document the life, pain, and struggle of his people in Gaza. Born at the Jabia refugee camp, he studied mass communication at Al-Akasa University. Over the years, he became one of the most prominent reporters of Al Jazeera, boldly covering intensive Israeli bombing in North Gaza. His work faced a struggle in the vision of a broad world of stories of general Palestinians.

Prior to his death, Anas Al Sharif posted a last message on social media, which was later described as his “last wish and will”. In this, he said, “If these words reach you, then know that Israel has been successful in killing me and calming my voice.”

This is my will and my final message. If these words reach you, know that Israel has succeeded in killing me and silencing my voice. First, peace be upon you and Allah’s mercy and blessings.

Allah knows I gave every effort and all my strength to be a support and a voice for my…

He always expressed pride in telling the truth without distortion or lies. He also shared his lifetime dream to return to his original hometown with his family to capture Ashkelon (Al-Mazal), though he conceded to God’s supreme will.

With those final words, Al Sharif very much talked of justice and remembrance. He called upon the world to rescue Gaza and push forward with the liberation struggle. Those few words deeply touched the hearts of his colleagues, friends, and supporters from all over the world.

Controversy and Condemnation Surround His Death

Israel’s army claimed in a statement that Anas Al Sharif was not only a journalist, but a leader of a Hamas cell who was associated with rocket attacks against Israeli citizens and soldiers. He cited intelligence and documents allegedly exposed from Gaza as evidence.

But Al Jazeera, plus several individuals or groups for civil liberties, strongly disagree with claims of that sort. According to him, the assault was to stifle journalists bringing into view the harsh reality of war at ground level. Press freedom groups and United Nations experts condemned the lack of hard evidence backing Israel’s allegations against Al Sharif. He highlighted the dangers faced by journalists in the struggle areas, especially when their reporting challenges powerful military narratives.

Anas Al Sharif’s death is the latest in a tragic series of journalists who were killed in Israeli attacks. In recent years, others such as Ismail al-Gaul, Rami al-Rifi, Samar Abudaka, and veteran correspondent Shirin Abu Akle have also lost their lives covering the struggle. Each disadvantage has promoted global calls for accountability and safety for journalists.
