September 22, 2025 | Dubai, UAE: His Royal Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, has officially announced the initiation of the humanitarian villages project, which has been established in memory of late brother, Sheikh Rashid bin Mohammed. Sheikh Hamdan launches humanitarian villages project on the tenth anniversary of Sheikh Rashid’s demise, embodying the principles of generosity, compassion, and dedication to community service that he espoused.

The project aims to construct integrated villages in disadvantaged areas, providing essential services such as housing, healthcare, education, and the requisite infrastructure to foster long-term self-sufficiency. Government officials have characterized this initiative as a sustainable approach to humanitarian assistance, specifically targeting the underlying factors contributing to poverty and underdevelopment.

Integrated Humanitarian Approach

The Rashid Villages project is structured to go beyond providing immediate relief. Instead, it focuses on building entire communities where residents have access to modern facilities and sustainable opportunities.

Each village will include:

  • Housing: Fully furnished homes equipped with basic services for families.
  • Education: Schools connected to the Digital School initiative under the Mohammed bin Rashid Global Initiatives (MBRGI), offering a blend of traditional and digital learning.
  • Healthcare: Medical centers providing preventive services, maternal and child care, vaccinations, and general treatment.
  • Community facilities: Mosques, multi-purpose halls, and youth academies for sports and training.
  • Infrastructure: Solar-powered lighting, paved roads, water systems, and fire safety measures.
  • Economic opportunities: Shops and commercial outlets operating under endowment models to generate local income and support families.

Sheikh Hamdan explained that the humanitarian villages project aims to create a foundation for families to live with dignity and stability. By combining essential services with economic and social programs, the initiative ensures that residents are not only supported in the short term but also empowered to build sustainable futures.

Officials noted that this approach sets Rashid Villages apart from traditional aid programs, which often focus on immediate needs without providing long-term solutions.

First Rashid Village in Kenya and Expansion Plans

The first Rashid Village will be built in Kenya, covering 72 dunums (around 7.2 hectares). It is expected to benefit approximately 1,700 people directly.

The village will feature a mosque, a hall for more than 500 people, and a modern school accommodating over 320 students. Healthcare services will be supported by awareness campaigns and first-aid training for residents, ensuring that communities can sustain medical knowledge and practices even after the facilities are established.

Recreational and sports facilities, including a football pitch and a youth training academy, will provide young people with structured activities and development opportunities. The inclusion of such facilities highlights the project’s focus on creating balanced communities with attention to education, health, and social life.

Sheikh Hamdan also announced that the humanitarian villages project will continue beyond Kenya, with plans to build one Rashid Village every year in different countries. This phased expansion will ensure a growing global impact, addressing the needs of thousands of people across vulnerable regions.

The UAE has a long history of contributing to humanitarian causes worldwide. With Rashid Villages, Dubai is reinforcing its role as a supporter of sustainable development and a partner in reducing poverty at the international level.

Legacy, Memory of Late Brother and Global Significance

The initiative carries strong personal meaning for Sheikh Hamdan. It was launched to commemorate ten years since the death of his elder brother, Sheikh Rashid bin Mohammed, who was widely respected for his character, love of sports, and commitment to charitable values.

By naming the project after Sheikh Rashid, the Crown Prince ensures that his memory of late brother will live on through tangible contributions to communities in need. Each village will stand as a living tribute to Sheikh Rashid’s values, linking his legacy with ongoing humanitarian work.

Humanitarian experts have welcomed the initiative as a significant step in rethinking how aid is delivered. By building complete communities with housing, education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, Rashid Villages aim to provide lasting solutions rather than temporary fixes.

Local leaders in Kenya have also expressed optimism about the project’s impact. Many rural communities continue to face challenges such as poor access to schools, healthcare facilities, and reliable infrastructure. The establishment of Rashid Villages is expected to make a measurable difference in raising living standards and improving opportunities for future generations.

The establishment of Rashid Villages contributes to Dubai’s history of promoting humanitarian and developmental initiatives globally. This project aligns with other efforts under the Mohammed bin Rashid Global Initiatives framework, which prioritizes the reduction of poverty, the advancement of education, the provision of healthcare, and the application of innovative approaches to humanitarian activities.

By pledging to construct one new village each year, Sheikh Hamdan exemplifies a model that may motivate similar undertakings in different regions. Officials have emphasized that this initiative transcends mere aid distribution and aims to empower communities toward achieving sustainable independence.

Furthermore, analysts observe that the humanitarian villages project embodies the United Arab Emirates’ broader objective of employing humanitarian diplomacy to reinforce relationships with communities and governments on an international scale.

Path Forward

The Rashid Villages humanitarian initiative constitutes a noteworthy enhancement to Dubai’s global development endeavors. The inaugural village is planned for Kenya, with a view toward expanding annually. This initiative serves as both a personal homage and a replicable framework for humanitarian support.

The establishment of integrated communities will facilitate the provision of shelter, healthcare, education, and employment opportunities. Consequently, the project aims to bring about transformative changes in some of the world’s most at-risk regions.

As Sheikh Hamdan inaugurates the Rashid Villages in honor of his deceased brother, this initiative reflects a dedication to translating legacy into tangible action. The goal is to construct communities characterized by dignity, stability, and optimism for the future.
