September 24, 2025 | Abu Dhabi, UAE: Starting from the 2025-26 academic year, new attendance rules in Abu Dhabi take effect, reshaping how schools will track student absences and updating student attendance policies in ways that affect every family. These student attendance policies under the Abu Dhabi Department of Education & Knowledge (ADEK) aim to make attendance stricter, but also clearer, fairer and more supportive. With the new regime, emphasis is on consistency, communication, and ensuring that absences don’t slip under the radar.

For parents and guardians, these attendance rules in Abu Dhabi mean being aware of what kinds of absences are allowed, what counts as unexcused, and what steps schools will take if a child frequently misses class. The rules around tracking student absences are tighter: both excused and unexcused absences are monitored, with thresholds beyond which schools must intervene. The updated student attendance policies say that even small patterns of lateness or absence will now trigger alerts and support.

Key Changes Under the New Attendance Rules in Abu Dhabi

Some of the major elements of the changes to student attendance policies include:

New Attendance Rules in Abu Dhabi
  • Thresholds for Absence: In Grades 1-12, missing more than 5% of school days in a year (about nine days) is flagged as a concern; for kindergarten, the limit is 10% (around 18 days). This is central to the attendance rules in Abu Dhabi, meaning fewer absences are tolerated without scrutiny.
  • Categories of Excused and Unexcused Absences: Excused absences include illness, emergency medical appointments, some family bereavements, designated competitions, exams or official duties. Unexcused absences cover family vacations during term time, non-urgent appointments, staying home without telling the school, etc. These definitions are an important part of tracking student absences under the updated student attendance policies.
  • Medical Absence Rules: Parents may submit a sick note for up to three consecutive days (max 12 days per year). After that, or for chronic illness, an official certificate from the Department of Health is required. This is a concrete example of how the attendance rules in Abu Dhabi manage excused absences.

How Schools Will Be Tracking Student Absences & Enforcement?

One of the biggest shifts under the attendance rules in Abu Dhabi is how schools are tracking student absenceson a daily basis and how rapidly they must inform parents when things go off-track:

  • Schools must record attendance daily via official systems (e.g. e-systems) and monitor lateness too. Patterns of lateness are now part of these attendance policies.
  • Any absence not notified or without valid documentation is marked unexcused. Schools must follow up absences within a short time frame.
  • If absences exceed the threshold (5% for Grades 1-12, 10% for KG), students are flagged as “cause for concern.” This label triggers further review and possible intervention.

Roles, Responsibilities & Parental Duties

The new policies clearly define what’s expected from parents under these regulations:

  • Parents must inform school of absences and provide required documentation if the absence is to be considered “excused.” Under the new attendance rules in Abu Dhabi, doing this promptly matters.
  • Even excused absences require students to catch up on missed lessons, homework, and assessments. There is no automatic pass just because absence was valid. This is part of ensuring tracking student absences has meaning.

Lateness & Other Related Rules

The attendance rules in Abu Dhabi don’t just cover full day absences: lateness matters too, under the wider student attendance policies.

  • Repeated lateness (e.g. arriving late to school multiple times) may lead to disciplinary steps. Schools may require students to sign in at reception, issue late slips.
  • Absences that fall before or after public holidays or Fridays may be counted differently or scrutinised more strictly under the tracking absences framework.

Why These Student Attendance Policies Are Being Strengthened

Parents will want to know why these new rules in Abu Dhabi are being introduced:

  • To reduce learning gaps: frequent absence disrupts continuity of learning and can leave students behind.
  • To ensure well-being: being present in school supports not only academic growth but social and emotional development.
  • To foster responsibility: children learning punctuality, regularity builds habits that help later in life.
  • To give schools early warning: tracking absences strictly lets schools and parents act before issues become serious.

What Parents Should Do Now?

To adapt to these attendance policies and avoid issues:

  1. Review the school’s attendance policy carefully know the thresholds, what counts as excused/unexcused.
  2. Keep medical records and documentation ready, especially for longer absences.
  3. Inform the school immediately about absences, even for short durations.
  4. Support your child in catching up on missed work.
  5. Encourage on-time arrival and minimise absences wherever possible.
