October 16, 2025 | Dubai, UAE: The process of Import UAE car to India is a dream for many immigrants and expatriates. They wish to retain their favourite vehicle and take it back to their hometown. Due to India’s stern customs and automobile procedures, such import of automobiles is far more difficult.

Unless one understands the laws, import duties can make it costlier. However, one path that has garnered attention is the use of Carnet De Passage (CPD), a type of import documentation that allows automobiles to be driven into the country without paying the import duty immediately. Understanding how this works, along with the country’s import rules, helps people know when and how to import UAE car to India .

Import UAE Car to India by Carnet de Passage Route

This medium is a global documentation used for the temporary arrival of automobiles abroad without paying import duties. A UAE-registered automobile owner can acquire a CPD and pay an amount according to the car’s value. It leads to the arrival of the automobile in India for a fixed period. Through that procedure, the vehicle is not a permanent import, avoiding the hefty tax that applies regularly.

It only works if all the Carnet De Passage rules are met with specific dates for arrival and return to Import UAE car to India. It also states that this vehicle cannot be sold in India, and all the laws of the Indian Road Transport Department must be followed. While this procedure is helpful for a temporary time, it is not suitable for permanent use. If one plans to keep the vehicle for a predefined time, then it is appropriate. Otherwise,  certain standards must be met for importing the automobile permanently.

Basic Import Regulations and Eligibility Criteria

Individuals need to fulfill regulations to Import UAE car to India. It includes documentation, customs duties, tax, and following the rules. The import duty is based on the car’s CIF value, and for vehicles below US$40,000, the import duty reaches more than 100%. In other cases, if the automobile is over US$40,000, the import duty can also increase. Moreover, there are GST and other liable taxes. Another crucial element is the timeline of the car. If the automotive is used for more than 3 years, it might be disqualified.

The automobile must meet Indian standards, including the availability of steering on the right, lighting, and emissions. For this procedure, only some Indian ports are officially allowed. Even the non-resident Indians wanting to apply for this procedure face certain restrictions, such as the car must arrive within 6 months of relocation. The owner must not have used the transfer of resident benefit, and only one automobile is allowed per family. Due to the hefty laws and taxes, many people find it arduous to meet all the requirements.

Managerial Work, Documentation, and Custom Duty

To Import UAE car to India, the organizational work and documentation are as crucial as taxation. Primarily, shipping is done via the sea in huge containers, which costs sea freight depending on the port chosen and the mode of transport. At the port, the car must clear customs duties, authorize documentation, and undergo checks.

The automobile is often checked for its standards and quality, ensuring it meets the security, fuel emissions, and technical standards, which might require modifications. Depreciating amount is also another element for used vehicles, where the officers might apply the depreciation allowances before further procedures. Once all the taxes are paid, the vehicle must be registered with the RTO.

The amount of registration, road tax, insurance, and specific charges of the state must be paid before on-road use. Because this is a very high-risk, costly procedure, many importers worked with known firms to navigate the issue.

Import UAE car to India is plausible both through CPD or importing permanently under the country’s procedures, but both methods carry hefty costs, documentation, and stern compliance. The CPD helps commuters avoid import taxes for a fixed period; a permanent import requires overpriced customs duties, strict checks, and rigorous eligibility. To most purchasers, importing an automobile makes sense only when the vehicle is special; otherwise, calculating the tax and local alternatives often serves as a more suitable choice for Import UAE car to India.
