Dubai, May 7, 2025: People from a large diaspora of both India and Pakistan, based in the UAE, feel fearful and restless as news of the Indian strikes “Operation Sindoor” trickled in. Both the Indian and Pakistani communities residing in the Emirates found themselves glued to their phones, worrying about relatives from back home and the far-reaching cascade of events that may ensue due to the heightening conflict.
What is Operation Sindoor?
Operation Sindoor was termed a major military strike launched by India against Pakistan in the wee hours of May 7, 2025. According to Indian officials, nine sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir were targeted for terrorist attack planning against India. These strikes were undertaken in retaliation for the Pahalgam attack of 22nd April in Kashmir, which had left 26 civilians dead, mostly Indian tourists.
According to Indian sources, Operation Sindoor was carried out at places where terrorist activities were going on, away from civilian, economic, or military targets inside Pakistan. Its name, ‘Sindoor,’ refers to the red powder worn by married Hindu women, symbolically dedicated to the women who were widowed in the mentioned attack in Pahalgam.
Pakistan claims at least 26 killed and 46 injured from these strikes, including civilians, and since then, Pakistan has called these actions by India an “act of war”. Pakistan also claims that 5 Indian Air Force jets were downed by them, a statement that India has not confirmed.
Expats in UAE: Sleepless Nights and Growing Worry
The news of Operation Sindoor has hit the Indian and Pakistani expats in the UAE hard. Since their families reside in the affected areas, they fear for their safety. The idea of this warfare being feared! It’s getting hard for expats to get a proper sleep or stay focused at work.
Both communities keep up to date with Operation Sindoor through news and social media. Many are checking in with their relatives back home through phone calls or text messages. Incertitude has paved the way for helplessness- speculating, waiting, and hoping for peace are all they can do.
The synergy of these two communities on the home front has always been quite strong, co-existence, co-labor, sharing streets and time in almost everything. However, Operation Sindoor now seems to have gripped the conversations in offices, cafes, and community groups directly; many are calling for an end to violence through dialogue.
Through community groups and social media outlets, people share news, discuss the issue, and provide emotional support. The Indian and Pakistani associations in the UAE have even advised their members to remain calm and refrain from spreading rumors. Despite the remote geographic distance from the conflict site, the emotional strain on India and Pakistan expats in UAE is evident.
“We are far from home, but our hearts are with our families. We just want peace and safety for everyone,” said an Indian expat living in Dubai.
“No one wants war. We hope both governments will find a way to resolve this without more violence,” shared a Pakistani expat in Sharjah.
Economy and Humanitarian Considerations
Any dispute between India and Pakistan will immediately exert long-range spillover effects on the entire regional fabric, including the UAE. Both South Asian countries are big trade partners for the Emirates. Any conflict can restrict economic flows through sea routes, ashore lands, or logistics, which, in tandem, would negatively impact the UAE’s business and logistics hubs.
The other big consideration is that the UAE has over 3 million expatriates from India and over 1.5 million persons of Pakistani origin living there, many of whom maintain strong family ties back home. Any form of escalation would cause concern within the diaspora communities. Given that there are high-frequency flights operating between the UAE and the subcontinent, any disruptions or escalations will definitely impact thousands of families, workers, and students.
From the UAE’s side, a tight eye is kept on the situation, and there are contingency plans for safety and security arrangements for the residents, no matter the nationality. Civil aviation authorities are yet to give notice on any changes to air routes; however, such changes may be implemented depending on how developments occur.
Calls for Restraint and Hope for Peace
The world leaders and governments, including the UAE, have sought restraint and dialogue between India and Pakistan exapts in UAE in this dispute. India has informed quite a few countries, including UAE, about the allegations behind Operation Sindoor and its restricted objectives; the focus remains on preventing scenarios of loss of innocent civilian lives and the turning of the situation out of control.
One hopes from the Indonesian and Pakistani communities of expatriates in the UAE that the crisis will not escalate any further. Many would want their governments to seek diplomatic avenues and solutions for peace. This situation is made much more personal due to their common past and strong ties that bind the two communities in the UAE.
Now with Operation Sindoor taking the global focus, India-Pakistan expats in UAE face an unsettling life. Their thoughts are with their families, and they pray for an end to all violence. Until the tension eases, one-way sleepless nights will likely continue for many in these closely-knit communities.
