India’s Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned on Saturday following days of nationwide youth protests over the alleged leak of a major medical entrance examination paper, marking a significant political setback for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.

The resignation came after sustained demonstrations led by thousands of students and young activists demanding accountability for the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak, which affected nearly two million candidates across the country. Protesters had insisted that Pradhan step down, arguing that the government had failed to protect the integrity of one of India’s most important competitive examinations.

The announcement triggered celebrations at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, which had become the center of the youth-led movement. Crowds gathered waving Indian flags, chanting patriotic slogans, dancing, and distributing sweets after learning of the minister’s resignation.

Protest Leaders Declare Victory

The demonstrations were spearheaded by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a youth movement that had organized rallies and sit-ins across multiple states since June. Addressing supporters at Jantar Mantar, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke declared the protests a success.

“We have done it,” Dipke told cheering supporters, announcing that the organization would formally end its agitation following the minister’s resignation.

Later in the day, senior government leaders, including Health Minister J. P. Nadda and Minister of State Jitendra Singh, met with CJP representatives. Following the discussions, protest leaders confirmed they would suspend their demonstrations under an agreement that no legal action would be taken against participants.

Minister Says Resignation Is in National Interest

Pradhan announced his decision through a post on the social media platform X, saying he had submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He said the decision was taken in light of the situation unfolding at Jantar Mantar and elsewhere in the country, adding that he wanted to prevent “anti-national forces” from exploiting the unrest.

Pradhan also expressed respect for the aspirations and expectations of India’s youth, acknowledging their concerns over the examination controversy.

The 57-year-old senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader had served as education minister since 2021 and was regarded as one of the party’s prominent figures.

NEET Paper Leak Sparked Public Outrage

The protests stemmed from the leak of the NEET-UG 2026 medical entrance examination paper in May, an incident that prompted authorities to cancel the original results and schedule a fresh examination.

The controversy disrupted the academic plans of approximately two million students preparing for admission to medical colleges. The episode also reignited broader concerns over transparency in competitive examinations, government accountability, and employment opportunities for young people.

Earlier in May, Pradhan had announced reforms to strengthen examination security and pledged a zero-tolerance policy against organized cheating networks. However, the assurances failed to calm public anger as students continued demanding political responsibility for the incident.

Police Crackdown Intensified Tensions

Public frustration escalated sharply earlier this week after police used baton charges and tear gas to disperse demonstrators attempting to march toward Parliament. Dozens of students were reportedly injured during the clashes.

The images of police confronting largely peaceful student protesters generated widespread criticism and intensified pressure on the government. Opposition parties raised the issue inside Parliament, accusing the administration of mishandling both the examination scandal and the subsequent demonstrations.

Following news of Pradhan’s resignation, authorities restored mobile internet services around Jantar Mantar, which had remained restricted for much of the week.

Opposition Demands Further Accountability

Opposition leaders welcomed the minister’s resignation but argued that additional accountability was necessary.

शाबाश देश भर के छात्रों, आप सभी पर गर्व है।

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said those responsible for using force against students should face consequences and called on Prime Minister Modi to apologize for the police response during the protests.

Activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had observed a 26-day hunger strike in solidarity with the students, described the resignation as “a victory of peace, patience and perseverance.”

Celebrations Mark End of Historic Protest

Thousands of young demonstrators remained at Jantar Mantar throughout Saturday, singing the national anthem, chanting “Jai Hind,” and celebrating what they described as a historic victory for student activism.

CJP’s Demand Rooster Has Been Updated:

1. Dharmedra Pradhan must resign – ✅
2. Rs 1 Cr to the families of all students who died by suicide – Pending
3. No action against any of the student protesters – Pending
4. Public Apology From RAF & Delhi Police – Pending

Many participants said the movement demonstrated that peaceful public pressure could produce meaningful political change. Protester Tluanga Ralte, carrying a copy of the Indian Constitution, said the outcome represented a victory for democratic values and challenged stereotypes about India’s younger generation.

The examination paper leak had evolved into one of the largest youth-led protest movements in recent years, expanding beyond concerns over a single exam to include demands for greater transparency, fairness, and government accountability.

Pradhan’s resignation makes him only the second Union minister to step down during Narendra Modi’s tenure following a major public controversy, underscoring the political impact of the nationwide student movement and its growing influence on India’s public discourse.
