Catch The End of Oak Street in IMAX for a thrilling dinosaur adventure

The End of Oak Street Review

After years away from big screen, director David Robert Mitchell returns with a project: The End of Oak Street Review. Starring Anne Hathaway, Ewan McGregor, Maisy Stella, and Christian Convery, the film centers on an ordinary suburban neighborhood. A mysterious event unsettles their neighborhood.

Oak Street is ripped away, transported to an unknown environment. The Platt family must navigate a world that is entirely unfamiliar. What begins as a cute family drama becomes a violent fight for survival against creatures that should have been extinct.

Before its release, The End of Oak Street carried a good amount of mystery. Its marketing deliberately revealed very little, leaving audiences questioning exactly what had happened to the neighborhood and what awaited the families trapped within it. With comparisons to Jurassic Park, E.T., The Twilight Zone and the golden era of Spielberg, expectations were high and audiences were seated with anticipation. But rather than simply attempting to recreate the magic of those classics, Mitchell crafts something that feels distinctly his own. A somewhat strange, nostalgic and occasionally unsettling experience that manages to balance spectacle with emotional stakes.

The film’s greatest strength is its atmosphere. From the very beginning, Mitchell transforms the familiar American suburb into something weird. Similarly, the streets, houses, swimming pools, and backyards that once represented safety suddenly become places of uncertainty. Moreover, the “summer vibe” now seems unsafe. Additionally, the production design captures the 1980s suburban aesthetic against a prehistoric world. However, nostalgic imagery contrasts with the surrounding threat. Finally, BMX bikes, Polaroids, and other period details reinforce the feeling. Overall, it feels like a lost Spielberg-era adventure revived for today.

And then FINALLY come the dinosaurs!

The dino-sequences are where The End of Oak Street truly comes alive, for fans of action films and dinosaur adventures. Mitchell doesn’t treat the prehistoric creatures as CGI blocks thrown at the characters for mere shock value; instead, their presence completely changes the environment around them. The film understands that dinosaurs are most frightening when they feel unpredictable, and some of its strongest sequences come from simply watching the characters whimper in fear while a dark shadow slithers towards them.

Anne Hathaway delivers one of the film’s strongest performances as Denise, packing an emotional punch as a mother who is torn between two worlds. Ewan McGregor complements her well, while Maisy Stella and Christian Convery bring believable youthful energy to the family dynamic.

Michael Gioulakis’ cinematography deserves a special mention. His camera constantly finds interesting ways to frame the ordinary against the extraordinary, whether it is a dinosaur towering over a suburban home or a simple conversation elevated by his zoom-in shots and his attention to detail. Possibly one of the more creative choices in the film was to constantly zoom in on each character’s face while showing what’s also happening in the distance, something that other dinosaur films fail to achieve due to its reliance on shoddy VFX and “mega-budget type cinematography”.

The film’s biggest weakness, however, is that it tries to overachieve in certain aspects but ends up falling flat on its face. While the central family dynamic is effective, some of the supporting characters feel underdeveloped (particularly one), and certain narrative ideas could have benefited from more breathing room. The runtime is a glaring issue, clocking in at around 99 minutes with an underdeveloped third act that is not able to tie up all the plot points it introduced in the first two acts, while also balancing heavy themes of survival and loss.

Overall, The End of Oak Street may not reinvent the dinosaur genre, but it provides an out-and-out action adventure. David Robert Mitchell has created an entertaining throwback that combines suburban family drama, prehistoric chaos and 1980s blockbuster nostalgia into one wonderful film that will appeal to audiences of…well, not all ages (certain scenes are borderline R-rated due to heavy violence). It occasionally stumbles, but when it works, it is exactly the kind of original blockbuster that deserves to be experienced on the biggest screen possible.
