After 2023’s masterpiece, Oppenheimer, legendary director (Christopher Nolan) returns to the big screen with his long-awaited magnum opus: The Odyssey. The film follows Odysseus (Matt Damon), the mighty King of Ithaca and Trojan War veteran. He sets sail on a treacherous journey to return to his wife and son, coming face to face with powerful sea creatures, powerful witches, vengeful gods and mythical beasts. Yet the battle that echoes the loudest is with his own self-demons, as he struggles to overcome his past in a mind-bending search for freedom.
Before its theatrical release, several online figures aimed to criticize and demean the film due to various aspects such as the casting choices, the production design, the accents, the dialogues and even the costumes. However, nothing could bring down the cinematic feat which Nolan claimed was his hardest and most challenging project in his entire career. Shot entirely on 70mm IMAX film with a budget of 250 million, The Odyssey was looking to be the biggest summer blockbuster alongside titles such as Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Moana….but will love silence the hate? Or will Nolan’s most beautifully crafted film fade in the background?
This film’s backbone is its breathtaking visuals and grandeur. Every island feels distinct, with vast coastlines, towering cliffs and ancient cities that feel lived in rather than built for spectacle. The cinematography captures both the beauty and horror of Odysseus’ journey, making every frame feel worthy of the legend it’s adapting. Instead of relying heavily on tacky CGI and cheap visual effects, the film uses real locations, large-scale sets, practical effects and classic camera techniques wherever possible. That decision gives a tangible authenticity that, sadly, is becoming increasingly rare in modern blockbusters. Whether it’s the intimate moments aboard the ship, the close personal encounters between Telemachus (Tom Holland) and Penelope (Anne Hathaway) or the grand mythological encounters, everything feels grounded, immersive and crafted with remarkable attention to detail.
The performances carry just as much weight. The emotional moments land perfectly because the characters never feel exaggerated or one-dimensional, but rather, they feel human. Every victory comes with the sacrifice of men, every setback feels frustrating, and Odysseus’ determination to return home becomes increasingly compelling as the journey unfolds. Matt Damon packs a punch as Odysseus; however, the man who stole every scene he was in was the evil Antinous (Robert Pattinson). Every smirk full of malice, every gaze of deceit and every lie is told with such precision, resulting in a coherent character arc of pure evil. Robert Pattinson shone in The Drama, and now his role in The Odyssey is a perfect feather in his multi-talented cap.

Despite its lengthy runtime, the film rarely drags because each encounter serves a purpose, whether it’s building the world, building Odysseus’ character, or pushing the narrative forward. It respects the source material while also making it accessible for the younger generation/modern audiences. Time has always been a prominent theme in most of his previous films (Tenet, Inception and even Oppenheimer) and The Odyssey is no exception. In the midst of the epic scale and grandeur, heart-stopping visuals and a pulsating score by Ludwig Göransson, Nolan still manages to penetrate the theme of time slippage and self-identity, ultimately echoing louder than anything else in the film.
A nitpick could be the sheer ambition that occasionally works against it. Some supporting characters don’t receive as much screen time as they deserve, making certain moments feel slightly rushed. A few emotional beats could also have benefited from more exploration, such as the deep and twisted relationship between Telemachus and Antinous; however, these are minor criticisms in what is ultimately an epic cinematic achievement that will be remembered for centuries to come.
Rush to an IMAX theatre near you to witness Odysseus’ epic journey, with an emotional core that shines amidst everything else!
