July 4, 2025 | Dubai, UAE – In a breakthrough moment for the UAE, Abu Dhabi flying taxi completed a successful test flight at Al Bateen Executive Airport. The test flight took place under the partnership of Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) and the US-based California’s Archer Aviation.
“Our initial test flight operations in the UAE represent a critical milestone as we prepare for our commercial deployment in Abu Dhabi. Testing our aircraft in actual operating conditions in the middle of summer provides us with the data we need to progress our commercial and certification efforts both in the UAE and in the U.S,” said Adam Goldstein, CEO and Founder of Archer Aviation.
In-depth Look Of The Test Flight For Abu Dhabi Flying Taxi
The test flight for the Abu Dhabi flying taxi was conducted by Archer Aviation on their Archer Midnight aircraft. While focusing on the flights’ Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL) performance, which means the aircraft will not need a runway. They are called eVotl when powered by electricity.

The specific aim of the tests was to assess and evaluate the vehicle’s performance for Abu Dhabi’s layered environment and tackle any concerns that may arise, like extreme heat, high humidity, and airborne dust. This test allowed the company to review Abu Dhabi flying taxis’ progression for commercial deployment.
Abu Dhabi flying taxi Archer Midnight was taken for the test flight with the support of the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council (SASC). The demonstration took place in the presence of experienced senior leadership:
- The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA),
- The Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO),
- The Integrated Transport Centre,
- Abu Dhabi Aviation
- Abu Dhabi Airports
- Representatives from Archer’s regional partners
The success proved to be a major achievement, following which Archer plans to expand the testing programs to other regions as well, so they can collect more supporting data to lift the Abu Dhabi flying taxi’s certification and commercialisation plans in both the UAE and other willing markets.
Archer Aviation also got approval for a regulatory design for the UAE’s first hybrid heliport at Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal to ensure a safe space for the operations of Abu Dhabi’s flying taxi.

Parallel Test Flight Took Place In Dubai
A test flight similar to the Abu Dhabi flying taxi was completed in Dubai a couple of days back by Joby Aviation. The company ran crewed test flights of eVTOL aircraft in Dubai, showing the aircraft’s wingborne flight capabilities. Joby’s plans to start the commute services connecting key locations such as Dubai International Airport, Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Marina, and Downtown Dubai, with vertiport constructions initiated.
What does this mean for the residents?
The Abu Dhabi flying taxi in partnership with Archer Aviation can provide several benefits to the residents :
- It will reduce commute Times, even a one-hour trip on land can be done in 5-10 minutes.
- Archer’s midnight craft produces zero emissions during flight. Hence Abu Dhabi flying taxis can lead to cleaner air and even less noise pollution.
- With the development of several vertiports, the Abu Dhabi flying taxi will be accessible and convenient, improving overall efficiency and quality of life.
- UAE’s active adoption of Abu Dhabi flying taxi can position it as a pioneer in the field, as Abu Dhabi is the key market for Archer’s Launch edition program.

Other Related Developments Taking Place
The UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority has already issued a framework to regulate the electric and conventional helicopters in the UAE, which will allow both the eVTOL aircraft and conventional helicopters to operate alternately on the same premises. The announcement felt crucial following the test flights of Abu Dhabi’s flying taxi as well as Joby’s air taxi in Dubai on Monday.
Abu Dhabi flying taxi Midnight is reported to be able to carry four passengers as well as a pilot. It is said to have a potential range of 150 km and a speed of up to 241 km/h. It can operate on both vertical and conventional take-off and landing. The general manager for Archer Aviation in the UAE, Talib Alhinai, said they were carefully considering the prices for the Abu Dhabi flying taxi, but it might cost more in the initial days of the launch. There are speculations that the prices might fall in the range of Dh300-350 for inter-city commute.
