November 24, 2025, Mumbai: Today, Bollywood grieved a real legend as Dharmendra, one of Indian cinema’s greatest stars, died at the age of 89 in Mumbai. The news has shocked the film industry and the fans alike. Dubbed the “He-Man” of Bollywood, Dharmendra was hospitalized at Breach Candy Hospital earlier this month, but after his recovery, he was back home. Unfortunately, destiny had different plans, and his family together with many celebrities were at the Juhu crematorium to offer their last goodbyes today.
The End of an Era for Bollywood
Dharmendra was not merely an actor, but rather the depiction of Indian cinema at its best. He is regarded as one of the most prolific actors of his time due to the sheer number of more than 300 films he did during the 60 years of his career. His roles in romantic films included playing opposite to the beautiful leading ladies in the movies ‘Phool Aur Patthar’ and ‘Aaye Din Bahar Ke’. Apart from this, he also starred in the films such as ‘Dharam Veer’ which was again an action-hit and soon followed by ‘Hukumat’ so the spotlight was on him all the time.

Among the characters, the most appealing one seemed to be the kindhearted Veeru from Ramesh Sippy’s 1975 super-hit ‘Sholay’. The audience not only appreciated but also admired Dharmendra for his looks and charm with great acting. The man was such a blessing to the film industry with his artistic works and for that he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, the second highest civilian honour of India in 2012. Without a doubt, he was the greatest and nobody, not even in the future, could ever reach his level of mastery over the three genres of acting (romance, action, and comedy) simultaneously.
Dharamendra, the most good-looking and the most lovable actor, appeared in the movie ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ and ‘Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya’ in the years 2023 and 2024 respectively. His recent flick is Sriram Raghavan’s ‘Ikkis,’ which is scheduled for release in December 2025. The senior actor still had a way of acting that completely captivated the spectators and a good number of them would still call him their favorite of all times.
Dharmendra’s Personal Life and Legacy
Dharmendra was born on the 8th of December 1935 in Nasrali, Punjab. The film industry came to know him in 1960 with his film ‘Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere’. His ever-changing and variable features eventually earned him the title of the most appealing and handsome hero of Bollywood. His invigorating songs and dancing, mainly the hit ‘Yamla Pagla Deewana,’ are still among the favorite activities of his abounding and enthusiastic fans across the country.

His first marriage was to Prakash Kaur and then to Hema Malini, the actress who was also his partner most of the time. He had three kids with Prakash Kaur, namely Bollywood stars Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, and daughters Esha Deol and Ahana Deol with Hema Malini, thereby making his family a mix of the Indian film industry. His generosity and low-profile lifestyle were the keys that opened the gates of the film world for him, where he was respected and loved by all.
A number of celebrities have paid homage to Dharmendra and this has been termed as the closing of a chapter in the history of the film world. Karan Johar, a prominent Bollywood filmmaker, was one of the firsts to express his sorrow, who, besides acknowledging the void left by Dharmendra in the hearts of the masses, also called him a great human being that time had selected for the industry. He was a blessing and a very nice person too, the best in the industry.

Dharmendra has been the brightest and the most glorious star in the sky of Bollywood, so to speak, forever. His name will always be there in the list of the most important contributors to Indian filmmaking. He is loved by the masses for his captivating charm and the classics that will never be over and whose light will not go out. Today, the entire city of Mumbai and the movie world, in general, mourn the loss of a true hero, the stellar Dharmendra, and say goodbye to him.
