2.6 A visually stunning sequel with top-tier animation and nostalgic charm, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie delivers fun for fans and kids but struggles with weak storytelling, choppy pacing, and underdeveloped characters
Review Overview

Super Mario Galaxy: Directed by the duo that brought us the first film (Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic), The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is the highly anticipated sequel to its predecessor that released back in 2023, delivering smiles, laughter and fun to audiences of all ages. Our famous plumber duo is back, this time with higher stakes, bigger weapons and more side characters, but can they truly save the galaxy when faced with inter-dimensional threats?

Visuals, Voices & Nostalgia Shine in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

The animation in this film is done to an exceptional standard, brimming with color and vibrancy that keeps you hooked and engaged throughout its 98 minute runtime. The background score flawlessly brings out the retro vibe of the games, allowing fans and kids to reminisce, fostering a nostalgic atmosphere.

Ultimately it feels like clips of the Mario games etched together in an attempt to bring out nostalgia and cheers from the audience. The film always keeps you at arm’s length, neither making you root for the characters or dismiss their actions, constructing very confused and incoherent character arcs.

Overall, die-hard fans of the original game might find it a fun one-time watch to reminisce niche references and easter eggs that throwback to the good old days, but if you’re not a fan of the series then we recommend getting hold of the OG Super Mario game, you’ll be far more entertained!

Animation & Visuals 4
Voice Acting 3.5
Background Score & Sound 3.5
Story & Screenplay 1.5
Pacing & Editing 1.5
Entertainment Value 1.5
Good Stuff Movie is of exceptional quality, filled with vibrant colors and visually engaging scenes. Maintains strong viewer engagement throughout its 98-minute runtime. Actors successfully convey both emotional depth and comedic timing.
Bad Stuff Donald Glover as Yoshi is heavily underutilized, with minimal dialogue (“Yoshi!” / “Hai!”). Multiple subplots remain unfinished or unresolved. Pacing feels inconsistent (start-stop), reducing immersion. Relationships and character dynamics are poorly explained or developed. Overall character arcs feel confusing and lack coherence.
