The UAE air taxi vertiport has achieved a global first after the country became the first in the world to certify a purpose-built commercial hub for electric air taxi operations. The certification, granted by the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), marks a significant milestone in the UAE’s push to develop advanced air mobility and paves the way for the launch of commercial electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft services in Dubai.
The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) announced that VDX, developed by Skyports Infrastructure, has officially received regulatory certification to support commercial electric air taxi operations. The approval follows an extensive evaluation of the facility’s infrastructure, safety measures, operational procedures and regulatory compliance.
Dubai’s first air taxi hub
Located next to Dubai International Airport, the VDX vertiport will serve as the central hub of Dubai’s upcoming air taxi network. It is the first of four planned vertiports being developed in partnership with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).
The network is expected to transform urban transportation by offering fast, electric-powered flights across key locations in Dubai. The additional vertiports currently under development will create a connected aerial mobility network designed to reduce travel times and ease congestion on the city’s roads.
The certification of VDX marks a critical step toward making these commercial services operational.
Strict regulatory approval process
According to the GCAA, the certification was granted after a comprehensive assessment covering every aspect of the facility’s operations.
Authorities reviewed infrastructure design, operational procedures, safety management systems, emergency response plans and compliance with national aviation regulations before approving the vertiport for commercial use.
The aviation regulator said the certification demonstrates that the UAE now has the regulatory framework needed to safely integrate electric air taxis into its aviation system.
Officials described the approval as an important step in ensuring that advanced air mobility develops under internationally recognised safety standards.
UAE sets a global benchmark
Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director General of the GCAA, called the certification a historic achievement for both the UAE and the global aviation industry.
He said the country is not merely preparing for the future of aviation but actively shaping it by establishing new international standards for advanced air mobility.
The GCAA added that the project reinforces the UAE’s ambition to become a global leader in aviation innovation while supporting broader national strategies focused on economic diversification, technological advancement and sustainable transport.
The initiative also aligns with the objectives of the “We the UAE 2031” vision and Dubai’s Economic Agenda D33, both of which seek to position the country as a global centre for innovation and future industries.
Industry leaders welcome milestone
Aqeel Al Zarouni, Assistant Director General for Aviation Safety Affairs at the GCAA, said the approval reflects the country’s ability to regulate emerging aviation technologies without compromising on safety or oversight.
Meanwhile, Duncan Walker, Chief Executive Officer of Skyports Infrastructure, said the certification represents a major step toward launching commercial electric air taxi services in Dubai.
According to Walker, the infrastructure, operational standards and regulatory systems needed to support commercial eVTOL aircraft are now fully established, allowing the project to move closer to passenger operations.
Industry experts believe the certification will encourage further investment in advanced air mobility while strengthening confidence among manufacturers, operators and international aviation stakeholders.
Inside the VDX vertiport
The newly certified VDX facility has been purpose-built to accommodate electric air taxis and future urban aviation services.
Spread across approximately 3,100 square metres over four storeys, the vertiport features two dedicated take-off and landing pads designed specifically for eVTOL aircraft.
The facility also includes rapid charging stations for electric aircraft, passenger processing areas and supporting operational infrastructure needed for commercial services.

Once fully operational, the vertiport is expected to handle up to 170,000 passengers every year, making it one of the busiest advanced air mobility hubs in the region.
A step toward the future of urban transport
The certification highlights the close collaboration between the GCAA, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority, Skyports Infrastructure and other strategic partners working to build Dubai’s future air taxi ecosystem.
As cities around the world explore cleaner and more efficient transport solutions, the UAE has positioned itself at the forefront of commercial electric aviation. By establishing the world’s first certified commercial eVTOL vertiport, the country has laid the regulatory and operational foundations for a new era of sustainable urban mobility.
With infrastructure now in place and certification complete, Dubai is moving closer to introducing commercial air taxi services that could reshape the way residents and visitors travel across the emirate in the years ahead.
