Summer Survival in UAE: How Residents Are Adapting Lifestyle Amid Extreme Heat
SHARE

UAE extreme heat safety: Since the temperatures have started rising throughout the UAE, the population itself is changing the way it lives so as to accommodate the overheated summer. Governments and society are pushing back against protective measures, and people are changing their lifestyles realistically so that they can survive the season of extreme heat.

The agencies of the government have reiterated the importance of observing heat safety precautions, particularly in the case of outdoor workers or workers who are subjected to direct sunlight. It has now become a need rather than a luxury, and in some parts, daytime temperatures are often over 45 °C.

Safety protocols on heat

In a bid to reduce risks associated with extreme temperatures, governments have re-enacted and enhanced summer safety measures. The purpose of these measures is to minimise heat-related illnesses and unsafe working and living conditions during the hottest months.

Key measures include:

• NOT spending time outside in the afternoon when it is at its best.

• adding more shaded luncheon areas in the work sites.

• Promoting an uninterrupted supply of drinking water.

• Introducing rotating outside work breaks.

The construction industry, delivery industry, and other outdoor industries are being urged to redesign working hours to prevent exposure to peak heat. Adherence to safety measures is also a priority, and fines are imposed in the case of violation.

Changes in lifestyle among residents

Outside the workplaces, residents throughout the UAE are also making adjustments to their everyday lifestyle to cope with the heat. There has been a great decrease in people moving out in the midday and evening hours, and early mornings are now the time of the day people prefer to move out.

Common adaptations include:

• Changing exercise habits to morning or evening.

• Depending more on indoor recreational facilities and shopping malls.

• Commuting by climate-controlled transport.

• Drinking more water during the day.

Families are also scheduling their shopping, social visits and errands during cooler hours to avoid unwarranted exposure.

Heat and health risks and awareness

Healthcare professionals remain on the alert to warn citizens of the risk of heat-related exhaustion and dehydration. The symptoms which are closely monitored include dizziness, fatigue, headache and excessive sweating, especially in outdoor workers.

Healthcare authorities have advised individuals to undertake some immediate action in the event that they develop the symptoms, including moving to shady or cool locations and keeping their water levels stable.

Workplace compliance and monitoring

Heat safety checks have been implemented in the construction sites and outdoor working zones by deploying inspection teams to check compliance with the heat safety regulations. The authorities have also documented a high compliance rate in previous years, and the majority of the companies introduced a structured midday break system and enhanced protection of the workers.

Hotlines and reporting lines are still in operation, and workers can report violations or unsafe working conditions.

Campaigns of public awareness

The level of awareness has been increased throughout the UAE to inform both the inhabitants and employers of heat hazards and prevention measures. The campaigns are centred on the simplistic yet efficient practices, including hydration, protective garments, and unnecessary outdoor exposure.

These activities are especially significant in the summer seasons when the cases of heat stress usually rise.

Outdoor worker support systems

Employers are called on to improve the welfare of workers by offering shaded rest areas, first-aid facilities, and emergency response facilities at workplaces. The riders and field staff also have their schedules adjusted so that delivery and logistics companies spend less time outdoors during the day.

The residents are also encouraged to be considerate of the outdoor workers by providing water to them or by enabling them to deliver during the best time, which is not during the peak heat time.

Old seasonal adaptations

Heat management is not a new initiative taken in the UAE, and it is evolving each year, given the rising temperatures. Cooperation in workplaces and raising awareness amongst the community on the effects of extreme summer conditions have been some of the reasons why we see the risks posed by extreme summer conditions reduced.

As the summer gets warmer, the authorities emphasize that more co-operation and compliance with safety criteria are crucial to safeguard health, prevent heat-related injuries and enhance safety conditions around the UAE.
