UAE February 23rd, 2026: The iconic Palm Pavilion of the United Arab Emirates, the national pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, has been awarded with the German Design Award 2026, a prestigious award at the German Design Council in the category of ‘Fair and Exhibition – Exhibition Design’. The Palm Pavilion is not a building, but rather an architecture that is capable of narrating a story. The Palm Pavilion is the identity of the UAE: it is based on the traditions, but it is moving to the future by turning a cultural icon into a modern structural masterpiece.

Award-Winning Design Of Palm Pavilion

The Palm Pavilion is renowned for its artistic and immersive architectural idea which combines Emirati culture with the principles of modern design. The thematic narrative of the pavilion is titled Earth to Ether, and creates thematic engagement with materials, narratives, and the spatial experience to offer a multisensory experience.

The characteristic feature of the design is the use of 90 palm inspired rachis columns that rise up to 16 metres tall. These create a shaded canopy that creates the impression of an oasis, a major cultural symbol in the UAE that portrays an environmental intuition as well as an architectural identity.

Showcasing The Emirati Culture With Architecture

The global jury praised the Palm Pavilion because of its well-organized space conception and a combination of the date palm, which symbolizes strength and custom, as the main architectural feature. These are not merely support columns that hold the structure together but rather they form a narrative journey that any visitor can relate to and one that glorifies the cultural heritage of the UAE.

Combining the Emirati classic with the accurate woodwork designed through Japanese design knowledge, the Palm Pavilion deconstructs old history in the context of a progressive architecture.

International Recognition And Reputation Of Visitors

The Palm Pavilion was the most visited national pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka where it attracted over 5 million visitors throughout its 6-month duration in the exhibition. Its architecture and cultural programming contributed to the creation of meaningful exchanges, dialogues, and interactions between audiences across the world. The Gold award of the German Design Award 2026 is an addition to an expanding list of awards received by the pavilion of the UAE and it already received acclaim on such a prestigious platform like BIE Bronze award, World Expo Awards, DFA awards and World Expolympics.

German Design Awards are internationally known in the world to celebrate progressive design that is culturally and socially significant. To secure Gold in this category makes the Palm Pavilion one of the most creative design projects of 2026, as it was recognised to have incorporated the combination of interactive experience, architectural impracticability, and cultural narration.

The Palm Pavilion is one of the bringing structures to the future as architecture and design progressively connect the past and the present, offering an opportunity to engage with the space and feel inspired by the focus of the design contemplations across the planet. The success of the pavilion highlights the desire by the UAE to take the world to the next level with regard to its cultural past and architectural creativity.
