Ban on filming of security locations
SHARE

UAE March 4th, 2026: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has enacted more stringent regulations with regard to filming of security locations within the nation. The relocation is in the process in the backdrop of the authorities insisting on the need to secure sensitive facilities and ensure national safety. Due to the recent escalation of events in the region and popularity of smartphones and social media networks, people can nowadays record and upload videos in real-time. Nonetheless, authorities have threatened that shooting some places without authorization can be a major threat to national security.

The new directive is a reminder to the residents and visitors that the filming of security locations is forbidden unless authorized to do so by the authorities. The government claims that the regulation is needed to keep the population safe and avoid the misappropriation of confidential data. The directive asks people to rely on official sources only for information.

Reasons Why The UAE Banned Filming Of Security Locations

It is apparent that the ban on filming of security locations has been enforced by authorities in the UAE as a way of safeguarding national security and safety of people. Military bases, government buildings, police stations, airports, and other critical infrastructures are among the places that are considered to be highly guarded. The use of videos or photographs of such sites has the potential to expose the operational information or the vulnerability that can be used. This way security officers reduce the number of times security sites are recorded on film and reduce the chances of such information being leaked in the society or used against the interests by corrupt individuals.

Authorities also observe that nowadays, videos can easily spread virally on the internet as people live in the digital age. One video posted to social media could view millions of individuals within minutes, making it more likely that classified information will be leaked to individuals with ill intent.

The UAE Has Strict Laws Against Photography And Videography

The UAE already has stringent laws on photography and videography. According to the privacy and cybercrime laws of the country, any process of capturing and recording or taking photographs of people without their awareness may attract hefty fines or even imprisonment. In other instances, the fines could be Dh150 000 to Dh 500,000 as well as jail sentences of contravention of privacy regulations.

On the same note, shooting locations particularly ones that touch on security, government or transport facilities without authorization may also lead to a lawsuit. Government officials emphasize that the regulation that prohibits filming of security locations is not a recent development, but rather it is being put into effect more stringently due to the changing security issues and recent regional events. The same law is applicable to content creators, tourists, and social media influencers who tend to film videos in different public areas.

Ban on filming of security locations

Implication On Social Media And Content Creators

Influencers, vloggers, and citizen journalists have transformed the manner in which individuals capture their environment. Due to recent regional events, for security reasons and to not spread false information and cause panic, the UAE has banned filming of security locations. As the UAE has limited availability of filming of security locations, creators should be careful on what and where they shoot.

Governments have threatened that the broadcasting and transfer of videos of places of restricted interest without the necessary permission may result in a lawsuit. Some content can be deleted and the people can be fined or prosecuted. Those who film are recommended to seek the filming permits form the concerned authorities in case they want to shoot videos in confined or sensitive places. Many professional or commercial productions in the UAE need a permit to film.

Cultural Sensitivities And Respecting Privacy

In addition to the issue of security, the laws of the UAE also focus on respecting privacy and cultural values. The act of capturing individuals without their consent is regarded as infringement of privacy, as well as in open places. The law governing the media operations is based on the protection of dignity, reputation, and personal life of people.

Due to this fact, people should not be aware only of the filming of security locations. People should not film families, residential properties, and individuals without authorization. Officials feel that the peaceful coexistence and adherence to the culture of a particular area by using cameras and smartphones responsibly.

Rules For Residents And Visitors

In order to prevent any legal inconveniences, residents and tourists are to adhere to several significant rules when shooting videos or taking pictures in the UAE:

  • Security facilities such as military facilities, police stations, and government buildings should not be filmed.
  • Record people without their permission.
  • Get authorizations to commercial or professional filming projects.
  • Obey instructions given to them by security personnel in the case they are requested to cease filming.
  • Do not post unbelievable videos or sensitive footage in social media.

These rules can be followed to make sure that the filming activities do not disrupt security operations or contravene the privacy laws.

The fact that the UAE is willing to tighten the belt around filming of security locations is evidence of the national dedication to national safety and insecurity of the sensitive government installations. In a society where content transferred through digital mediums disseminates immediately, governments feel that there should be more strict regulations when it comes to such videos to avert any form of security threat.

Although photography and videography are still popular activities among the residents, tourists, and content creators, due to recent events, the ban has been made more strictly and they have to be conducted in a reasonable manner and within the perimeter of the law. These rules allow people to play a role in the safety and stability of the UAE and all these will be achieved without violating these rules and filming of security locations.
