August 20, 2025 | Dubai, UAE: US visa for UAE residents are set to undergo significant changes starting on September 2, 2025. New regulations require most applicants to attend mandatory in-person interviews, potentially creating delays for thousands of travellers.

Embassy Confirms Processing Adjustments

The US Embassy in Abu Dhabi has officially responded to concerns about potential delays following the implementation of stricter visa interview requirements. Embassy officials acknowledge that the US visa for UAE residents processing times may extend as demand for interview appointments increases significantly.

“We are working diligently to ensure an efficient, smooth, and effective visa process despite the changes,” a spokesperson told local media. The embassy emphasised that all visa decisions remain national security decisions, requiring adequate time for proper evaluation.

Major Policy Changes Take Effect September 2

Under the new rules, almost all non-immigrant visa applicants must attend in-person interviews with consular officers, marking a substantial shift from pandemic-era flexibilities. This affects US visas for UAE residents across all age groups, including children under 14 and adults over 79, who were previously exempt from interview requirements.

The changes represent a return to pre-pandemic procedures when interview waivers were granted only in very limited cases. During COVID-19, waiver eligibility had been expanded to reduce embassy visits, but this flexibility is now ending.

Who Must Attend Interviews?

The new policy requires interviews for virtually all non-immigrant visa categories, with very few exceptions remaining. Only certain temporary visitors under specific B visa categories and some official government travellers may qualify for waivers. Even a US visa for UAE residents renewing B1/B2 visitor visas must meet strict criteria, including applying within 12 months of visa expiry and having no previous refusals.

Students, workers, and business travellers holding F, M, J, H, L, and O-1 visas will no longer benefit from the dropbox facility that allowed document submission without interviews. This change eliminates the widely used streamlined process for most visa categories.

Current Wait Times and Delays

Recent data shows concerning trends for the US visa for UAE residents seeking appointments. According to official statistics, Dubai currently shows a 13-month wait time for B1/B2 visitor visa appointments, while Abu Dhabi reports an 18-month wait for the next available appointment. Student visa appointments in Dubai show no immediate availability, while Abu Dhabi has no current delays for F, M, and J categories.

These extended waiting periods reflect growing demand that predates the new interview requirements. Travel industry experts report that appointment availability in some regions now stretches to nearly 18 months, with significant delays across multiple visa categories.

Embassy Resources and Appointment Scheduling

The US Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the US Consulate in Dubai release new appointments every Friday morning between 7:30 AM and 11:30 AM local time, excluding holidays. Applicants with existing appointments can log into their accounts to reschedule to earlier slots if available.

For urgent travel needs, US visa for UAE residents may request expedited appointments for medical, educational, or humanitarian purposes. However, applicants must first complete the DS-160 form, pay standard fees, and schedule regular appointments before requesting emergency slots.

Industry and Applicant Impact

The new requirements will significantly impact the UAE’s diverse expatriate community, including Indian, Filipino, and Arab residents who frequently travel to the United States for business and leisure. Additional costs for travel and accommodation to attend interviews may burden applicants, particularly those living far from embassy locations.

Travel agents report that rejection rates appear to be increasing alongside longer processing times, affecting even well-documented business and leisure visa applications. The combination of limited appointment availability and stricter requirements creates challenging conditions for a US visa for UAE residents.

Preparation Recommendations

Embassy officials strongly advise early application submission, given the expected increase in interview demand. Applicants should regularly monitor embassy websites for appointment availability and updated procedures. Complete documentation preparation becomes more critical as face-to-face evaluations replace streamlined processing methods.

The return to comprehensive in-person screening reflects the US Department of State’s commitment to enhanced national security protocols, ending the temporary relaxations introduced during the pandemic period.

These changes mark a significant shift for the US visa for UAE residents, requiring adjusted timelines and expectations for travel planning to the United States.
