August 29, 2025 | Dubai, UAE: The UAE’s Education Ministry has issued a stern phone ban in UAE schools, forbidding students from bringing mobile phones within the academic premises. The initiative is supported by Ministerial Resolution No. 851 of 2018, which aims to mitigate distractions, increase students’ privacy, and inculcate a focused academic environment.

Institutions have implemented new protocols for the phone ban in UAE schools to enforce the law effectively in schools. It also requires the support of educators and parents alike to sustain the change.

New Rules and Confiscation Policy

Academic institutions have received instructions on how to proceed with the inspection for the phone ban in UAE schools without compromising a student’s privacy. The authorities are allowed to search personal items such as bags, and physical contact is not permitted.

Violating the rules comes with stern penalties resonating within the Student Behaviour Management Regulations. A first-time offense will result in a one-month confiscation, while if repeated multiple times, the confiscation will continue until the end of the academic year.

The school must issue a notification to parents and acquire their signatures in official documentation upon return and confiscation.

Why the Phone Ban in UAE Schools is Necessary

The Education Ministry’s decision is not just about discipline; it is about reshaping the environment that prioritizes, that fosters an environment of security, respect, and attentiveness. The introduction of phones in school premises has been a leading cause of distraction, diminished curricular performance, and potential misuse, capturing images of students or teachers without consent.

By prohibiting these devices, UAE schools aim to restructure the classroom as spaces of learning and interaction, rather than mediums of unintended scrolling or screen addiction.

This initiative of a phone ban in UAE schools also reinstates technological boundaries, helping students to use academic tools such as notebooks, school-provided devices, or computers.

Responses of Educational Authorities

Schools have swiftly adapted to the ban in their organizational policies, both public and private schools, incorporating the Educational Ministry syllabus. Schools are required to comply. Several schools have rolled out awareness campaigns to educate their parents and students.

Some private schools are taking it a step further. For example, Emirates International School in Dubai has banned the use of phones within the classroom premises, reinstating broader national initiatives.

In schools across Abu Dhabi, there is an extensive ban on all devices, such as smartwatches and other electronic devices, which will be confiscated if found on campus premises. Schools should be aware that these measures are non-cancellable and will be strictly implemented throughout.

Maintaining Compliance: Parents and Educators’ Role

Implementing the phone ban in UAE schools requires more than school administration. It involves community support. Schools have requested parents to reinforce the rules by asking their children to leave their phones at home.

Principals like Ibrahim Baraka of Al-Shula Private School declared the policy as necessary and crucial for integration and learning. Communication policies include assisting students with salient school portal passwords rather than using their cell phones.

Schools also underscore the consequences of non-compliance, including removal from extracurricular activities and referral to the Child Protection Unit if unauthorized images of staff or students are found.

The phone ban in UAE schools is a thoughtful initiative protecting academic cohorts and student responsibilities. With clear instructions, stern confiscation rules, and parental support, the Ministry aims to diminish distractions and create an atmosphere of focus and attentive learning.

While the change also requires compliance from students and support from educators and family alike, the promising initiative of a distraction-free learning environment and inculcating real human interaction and focus shows long-standing benefits. By neglecting mobile devices within the school premises, UAE institutions can rebuild strong educational outcomes and student well-being.
