New US Visa Rules
What UAE Applicants Must Know in 2025

August 31, 2025 | Dubai : The new US visa rules are here, and for many travellers in the UAE, the process of getting an American visa just became more complicated. Starting September 2025, the U.S. Department of State has rolled out fresh requirements that will affect almost every applicant, including those who were previously exempt. The announcement has already created buzz among UAE residents, especially those with travel, study, or work plans in the United States.

At the heart of the matter is a push to tighten immigration processes. Officials say the new US visa rules for UAE applicants are designed to improve security and prevent misuse of the system. But for families, students, and professionals in the Emirates, it means adjusting to stricter checks, higher costs, and longer waiting times.

So, what exactly is changing? Here is a breakdown of the six major updates under the new US visa rules and what they mean for UAE residents.

1. Mandatory In-Person Interviews

Until now, many travellers could get their visas processed without showing up for an interview. That policy is gone. Under the new US visa rules for UAE applicants, most people applying for a US visa will need to attend an in-person interview at the U.S. Embassy in Abu Dhabi or the Consulate in Dubai. This applies even to those renewing their visas. The aim is to give consular officers more face-to-face time with applicants before granting approval.

2. No More Age-Based Exemptions

Previously, children under 14 and adults over 79 didn’t need to appear for interviews. That exemption has now been removed. Under the new US visa rules, even kids and senior citizens must attend an interview if they want to travel. This change has surprised many families in Dubai and Abu Dhabi who are used to faster processing for younger or older applicants.

3. Stricter Renewal Waivers

Renewing a US visa is also no longer as easy as it once was. While waivers are still possible, the conditions have become tougher. To qualify, applicants must apply in their home country, have no prior refusals, and apply within 12 months of their visa expiring. Even then, officers can still ask for an interview if they choose. For many frequent travellers, this means preparing for extra steps during renewals.

4. New Rules for Immigrant Visa Interviews

Another major change will start on November 1, 2025. Under the new US visa rules for UAE applicants, most people applying for immigrant visas must complete their interview in their country of residence or nationality. This limits flexibility for those who used to schedule interviews abroad. Exceptions will be rare, so UAE residents planning to move to the U.S. will need to carefully prepare documents and expect longer timelines.

5. Social Media Checks for Students

Students applying for F, M, or J visas face a new level of scrutiny. Since June, they have been asked to make their social media accounts public. Applicants must list all usernames from the last five years in their visa forms. Consular officers will review accounts for anything linked to violence, extremism, or threats. The new US visa rules also caution against deleting posts before applying, as this might look suspicious. For young students in the UAE, this step has added pressure to keep their digital profiles clean.

6. New $250 “Visa Integrity Fee”

Starting October 1, 2025, almost all non-immigrant visa categories will carry an extra $250 fee, known as the “visa integrity fee.” For Indian nationals in the UAE, this will raise the total cost of a tourist US visa to about $425. The fee covers tourists, students, and temporary workers, making it one of the most significant cost increases in years. Authorities say the fee might be refunded if travellers follow all the rules and leave the U.S. on time.

What This Means for UAE Residents?

For UAE residents, the new US visa rules for UAE applicants will mean planning earlier, budgeting more, and preparing carefully. Appointments are expected to take longer to secure, and interviews will become a standard step for almost everyone. Families with young children, students heading to U.S. universities, and business travellers alike will all need to rethink their timelines.

New US Visa Rules

While these changes may feel like an added burden, U.S. officials argue they are part of a broader strategy to increase national security. For now, UAE residents hoping to visit the United States should mark their calendars and get their paperwork ready well in advance.

The new US visa rules are not just policy changes, they are a reminder that travel is evolving, and careful preparation is now more important than ever.
