A construction site turned into a classroom on World Environment Day 2026.

China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) celebrated the occasion at Project R1013/2F, the Improvement of Al Shindagha Corridor, which was a combination of environmental education, collective commitment and direct action.

A day of more than 100 employees, representing six nationalities – Chinese, Pakistani, Indian, Nepali, Bangladeshi, Egyptian – was less of a formality and ceremony and more about making awareness visible and measurable.

Awareness Before Action

The World Environment Day programme kicked off with an environmental awareness session where the senior management team from CSCEC as well as project team members participated in the session.

The session discussed the significance of protecting the environment, sustainable construction methods, and the individual duty on the construction site to reduce environmental impacts.

The workers did not simply listen, they actively participated. Also, at the end of the session they made a formal collective environmental pledge, which was a shared reaffirmation of their commitment to protecting the environment, both on and off the project site.

Signage activities were then conducted, formally starting the project’s environmental campaign and reinforcing environmental messages to the workforce. The pledge and signage kindled the spirit for the remainder of the day.

World Environment Day: From Pledge to Cleanup

The second phase of the World Environment Day programme was from awareness to action. A site wide clean up campaign was undertaken throughout the project. The workers and staff worked together to ensure the site cleanliness and to promote good housekeeping practices.

Cleanup activities were performed outside the project’s Right of Way, where approximately 10 bags of waste were collected. The collective effort showed something that awareness sessions alone cannot. It demonstrated that the results are tangible and visible when the workforce is engaged rather than just instructed.

The day also included tree plantation at the site office and a creative reuse initiative. The plastic bottles were repurposed into desk planters to promote the principle of reuse as a practical daily habit, rather than an abstract environmental concept.

Sustainability Built Into Every Shift

World Environment Day served as a public marker of values that CSCEC has integrated into the project’s daily operations. All metal, wood and general waste is segregated across the site and there are recycling bins for these streams. Workforce awareness is maintained throughout the year with regular environmental toolbox talks.

The use of treated water as a meaningful measure to suppress dust generation, is one of the most important environmental issues faced by the project. Fuel efficiency and anti idling regulation are in effect for equipment and vehicles.

The project is located near water and requires particular care. Hence, the surrounding marine and coastal environment is protected by spill prevention and control systems.

A project of this scale and location also needs heat stress management while keeping it compliant with the environment and ensuring workforce productivity. This rounds the challenge profile for the project.

The project itself is a reflection of the infrastructure ambition it’s operating in. The bridge between Dubai Islands and Bur Dubai side will be designed as a two-way (duplex) with four lanes. It will include separate cycling and pedestrian paths. It is part of the wider Al-Shindagha Corridor improvement programme.

The activities did not conclude with speeches and certificates only. The CSCEC’s World Environment Day activities ended with full waste bags, trees planted, and staff who returned to work the next morning with the commitments made during the day.
