A Dubai court robbery case has ended with the conviction of a 32-year-old man who was found guilty of violently stealing a gold-plated chain from another man during a financial dispute. The defendant punched the victim before forcibly snatching the chain, and the court relied on surveillance footage, witness testimony and police evidence to convict him of robbery by coercion.

According to court records, the incident took place as the victim was leaving an apartment in Dubai where his family was staying. The encounter quickly turned violent when the defendant confronted the victim and launched an unprovoked attack.

The court found that the use of force to seize the victim’s property met the legal definition of robbery, leading to the man’s conviction.

Attack Linked to Financial Dispute

Prosecutors told the court that the confrontation stemmed from a disagreement over money. However, instead of resolving the issue through legal channels, the defendant allegedly resorted to violence.

The victim said he was leaving the residential building when the accused approached him unexpectedly. Without warning, the defendant punched him in the face before grabbing a gold-plated chain from around his neck.

Authorities estimated the value of the chain at approximately Dh700.

Investigators said the defendant used sufficient force to overpower the victim, preventing him from resisting while carrying out the theft.

Knife Found During Investigation

Court documents revealed that the accused was carrying a knife during the incident, although there was no indication that the weapon was used to inflict injuries.

Officials said the presence of the knife was among the factors examined during the investigation, which sought to establish the full circumstances surrounding the robbery.

After taking the chain, the defendant fled the scene, prompting the victim to report the incident to Dubai Police.

Police Investigation Relied on Surveillance Footage

Dubai Police launched an investigation immediately after receiving the complaint. Officers gathered evidence from the scene, interviewed witnesses and reviewed surveillance camera footage from the area.

The combination of CCTV recordings, witness statements and other investigative findings helped authorities reconstruct the sequence of events.

Police were able to identify the suspect, who was later arrested and referred to the Public Prosecution. The case was subsequently transferred to the misdemeanour court for trial.

Prosecutors argued that the evidence clearly showed the defendant had intentionally used violence to take property that did not belong to him.

Court Finds Use of Force Constituted Robbery

In its judgment, the court concluded that the prosecution had presented sufficient evidence to prove the robbery charge beyond reasonable doubt.

Judges stated that the defendant deliberately assaulted the victim to deprive him of his property and used force to overcome any resistance during the theft.

The ruling explained that robbery differs from ordinary theft because it involves violence, intimidation or coercion directed at the victim. In this case, the physical assault immediately before the chain was taken fulfilled the legal elements required for a robbery conviction.

The court also relied on surveillance footage and witness testimony, which supported the victim’s account of the incident.

Conviction Highlights Serious Consequences

Based on the evidence presented during the trial, the court convicted the 32-year-old defendant of robbery by coercion.

The case highlights the UAE’s firm legal approach toward crimes involving violence and theft. Authorities continue to encourage victims of robbery and assault to report incidents promptly so that investigations can begin while evidence remains available.

Police say modern investigative techniques, including surveillance footage and witness testimony, play a crucial role in identifying suspects and ensuring they are brought before the courts.

The conviction also serves as a reminder that personal or financial disputes cannot be resolved through intimidation or violence. Individuals who use force to seize another person’s belongings face serious criminal consequences under UAE law.

The defendant’s conviction was based on the totality of the evidence, including the victim’s testimony, CCTV footage and findings gathered during the police investigation, all of which convinced the court that the robbery had been committed through the use of force.
