The UAE parent-friendly workplaces initiative is gaining momentum as the country strengthens efforts to attract and retain global talent by prioritising family wellbeing alongside economic growth. Through supportive workplace policies and the Parent-Friendly Label programme, employers are helping working parents achieve a better work-life balance while improving productivity, employee retention and long-term business success.

As competition for skilled workers intensifies worldwide, countries continue to invest heavily in infrastructure, innovation and technology. However, policymakers increasingly acknowledge that these factors alone are no longer enough to attract and retain top talent. For many professionals, particularly those with young families, access to supportive workplace policies and a healthy work-life balance has become a decisive factor.

The UAE has made family wellbeing a central pillar of its long-term development strategy, building on principles established since the formation of the Union in 1971. The country’s leadership has consistently emphasised that strong families and cohesive communities are essential foundations for sustainable economic and social progress.

Leadership Emphasises Family Support

The importance of supporting working parents has been reinforced by President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who has stressed the role of family-friendly policies in shaping future generations.

“Allowing working parents ample time to nurture their children is key to raising future generations able to actively contribute to society and advance the nation’s development and growth,” Sheikh Mohamed has said.

The statement reflects the UAE’s broader vision of integrating family wellbeing into national development policies, encouraging both public and private sector organisations to create environments where employees can balance professional responsibilities with parenting.

Parent-Friendly Label Drives Change

To encourage employers to adopt family-focused workplace practices, the Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority launched the Parent-friendly Label programme in 2021.

The voluntary recognition initiative, open to organisations across the UAE, encourages employers to go beyond existing legal requirements by introducing innovative workplace policies that support parents while maintaining business performance.

The programme promotes flexible working arrangements, parental support measures and workplace cultures that enable employees to succeed both professionally and personally.

Since its launch, the initiative has expanded significantly. According to programme figures, it has positively influenced more than one million employees worldwide, while more than 311,000 employees in the UAE have benefited directly from organisations participating in the initiative.

Officials say the programme demonstrates the country’s ambition not only to strengthen families within the UAE but also to contribute to the development of global standards for parent-friendly workplaces.

Report Shows Business Benefits

The latest Parent-friendly Label Impact Report 2025, titled Thriving Through Talent: How Parent-Friendly Policies Drive Balance, Growth, and Global Competitiveness, highlights measurable gains for organisations that invest in family-friendly practices.

The report challenges the traditional belief that supporting working parents reduces productivity, presenting evidence that such policies can instead improve employee performance, retention and workplace satisfaction.

Among the report’s findings, 67 per cent of mothers and 73 per cent of fathers said parent-friendly policies improved their daily productivity.

Employee loyalty also increased in organisations with supportive workplace environments. Around 68 per cent of employees reported that family-friendly policies influenced their decision to remain with their employer for more than two years.

In addition, 77 per cent of respondents said they would recommend their organisation as a parent-friendly workplace, reflecting higher levels of employee satisfaction and engagement.

Flexibility Strengthens Workforce

Flexible working arrangements emerged as one of the strongest contributors to employee wellbeing.

According to the report, 70 per cent of employees said flexible work arrangements are promoted and supported across all levels of their organisation. Meanwhile, 78 per cent expressed satisfaction with the assistance available for unexpected childcare emergencies.

Experts say such measures reduce stress among working parents while helping organisations retain experienced employees and minimise staff turnover.

By normalising caregiving responsibilities and fostering cultures built on trust and flexibility, employers are also creating more resilient and motivated workforces capable of sustaining long-term productivity.

Strong Families, Stronger Society

Beyond workplace performance, policymakers argue that supporting families delivers wider social and economic benefits.

Family-friendly employment practices are viewed as an investment in children’s healthy development, stronger communities and future national prosperity. Officials believe that when parents receive adequate workplace support, they are better positioned to nurture future generations who can contribute meaningfully to society.

The UAE’s approach aligns with its broader objective of strengthening social cohesion while maintaining its competitiveness as a destination for global talent.

Collective Responsibility for the Future

As the UAE continues to expand initiatives supporting working families, authorities have called for greater collaboration between government institutions, private companies and society to create more inclusive workplaces.

Officials believe the next phase of the country’s development will depend on collective efforts to strengthen families while building flexible, future-ready organisations.

By integrating parent-friendly policies into workplace culture, the UAE aims to establish a model that supports economic growth, enhances employee wellbeing and inspires other countries to adopt similar approaches that benefit parents, children and employers alike.
