Riyadh Airport Disruptions: Airlines Cancel Flights as Saudi Arabia Issues Security Warnings

Houthi strikes hit two Saudi airports this week. Moreover, Saudi Arabia flight cancellations October 2026 ripple through carriers.

It is not over yet.

Imagine checking in for your flight to Riyadh on Wednesday morning, boarding pass ready, bags packed, only to find the departure board showing nothing but red. Thousands of passengers faced a harsh reality this week after drone and missile strikes. The strikes were attributed to Yemen’s Houthi forces and hit King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh.

Operations at the airport halted for over an hour on October 8. When runways reopened, the aviation damage spread across the region. It touched airlines from Germany to India. Passengers from Manila to Mumbai faced disrupted plans well into next week.

This disruption is part of the broader picture of Saudi Arabia flight cancellations October 2026.

The Scale of What Happened

Three people lost their lives and 36 others were injured when strikes hit King Khalid International Airport and Abha International Airport in southern Saudi Arabia, according to the kingdom’s General Authority of Civil Aviation. The targeting of two airports simultaneously, including one deeper inside Saudi territory, marked a significant escalation in the conflict’s reach into civilian infrastructure.

The numbers that followed on the aviation side were staggering. More than 275 flight movements were wiped from Saudi airport schedules on October 8th alone. Aviation tracking data from the days just before, covering October 5th and 6th, had already recorded 75 cancellations and 1,262 delayed flights rippling outward from Saudi Arabia into the UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, Jordan, Egypt and Israel a chain reaction that illustrates just how tightly the region’s airspace is interconnected.

The Airlines That Walked Away

Carriers did not wait for instructions. They pulled out quickly.

Air India grounded its Riyadh routes through at least October 10th. Air India Express followed, suspending flights from Bengaluru, Kochi and Kannur, three cities in southern India where large working communities depend on regular Saudi Arabia connections to support families back home.

Akasa Air joined the suspension. IndiGo announced restrictions running through October 9th. Lufthansa Group also paused its Riyadh operations. Philippine Airlines cancelled its Manila to Riyadh service on October 8th and the return journey on October 10th. Several Asian and European carriers extended restrictions that had already been in place, stretching disruption timelines further than initially announced.

At the time of writing, around 31 additional cancellations across Saudi airports were anticipated for Friday alone.

The US Mission in Saudi Arabia and the Embassy of India in Riyadh both issued formal travel advisories on October 7 8 2026 urging citizens to exercise heightened vigilance amid aviation disruptions

Two Countries Telling Their People: Be Careful

The US Mission in Saudi Arabia issued a security alert on October 7th and updated it on October 8th. The message was direct. Americans across the Middle East should exercise heightened vigilance. Flight cancellations, airspace closures and travel disruptions are all possible. Check with your airline before heading anywhere near an airport.

US government employees face additional restrictions, they now need special authorisation to use King Khalid International Airport and face travel limitations in certain parts of the kingdom. Private American citizens are not under the same restrictions but are strongly advised to stay alert, monitor official updates and keep away from areas near the Yemen border.

The US State Department had already placed Saudi Arabia at Level 3 on its travel advisory scale — Reconsider Travel — from September 15th. That designation has not changed.

India’s Embassy in Riyadh put out its own advisory, asking Indian nationals across the kingdom to stay indoors when necessary, follow guidance from local Saudi authorities and resist the urge to share unverified content about the ongoing situation online. The embassy confirmed that diplomatic services including visa processing were continuing normally. Anyone needing emergency help can reach the 24-hour community helpline on 800 247 1234.

The Ripple Nobody Talks About

Every cancelled flight to Riyadh is not just a Riyadh problem. Saudi Arabia functions as a major transit hub, connecting passengers flowing between South Asia, Southeast Asia, East Africa and Europe. When Saudi airspace tightens or its airports go quiet, journeys that have nothing to do with the conflict itself get stretched, rerouted or abandoned.

Travellers holding separate tickets for connecting legs face the sharpest exposure. Unlike a single booking where the airline takes responsibility for the chain, separately ticketed journeys leave passengers managing each leg individually. A disruption on leg one does not automatically trigger accommodation or rebooking on leg two, three or four.

Airlines that are still flying have been rerouting over alternative airspace adding hours to journeys that would normally take a fraction of the time, increasing fuel costs and arriving at destinations considerably later than scheduled.

If You Are Travelling to, From or Through Saudi Arabia

Stop. Check. Then move.

Do not leave for the airport without first confirming your specific flight is operating not just that the route exists, but that your exact service on your exact date is confirmed. Call or check the airline’s app directly. Airport websites are sometimes updated faster than general news sources. Make sure your airline has your current contact details. Carriers send disruption notifications by message and email, but only to the contact on file when the booking was made.

If a refund or alternative journey is offered, read what is attached to it. Not all alternatives are equal and some come with conditions that may affect onward plans.

For anyone already in Saudi Arabia, the clearest advice is the simplest: follow Saudi authorities and your country’s embassy, not social media. In a fast-moving security situation, the gap between what is circulating online and what is actually true can be significant and closing it matters.

The situation is changing. Keep checking.
