A Kerala Bus Conductor Who Started an International Humanitarian Movement
Vinod Bhaskaran was no ordinary human being. A conductor on a Kerala bus by vocation, he donned a uniform during the day and a heart filled with purpose twenty-four hours a day. What began in 2011 as a modest effort to feed the poor through a Facebook group called ‘We Help’ went on to become a multi-national rescue mission later on, altering and saving thousands of lives.
In 2014, witnessing the pressing need for blood during health emergencies, this visionary Kerala bus driver started Blood Donors Kerala (BDK), a kind-hearted community now spreading from India to the UAE and other GCC nations. His is the very essence of the colossal impact brought about by grassroots movement spurred by compassion. From being in charge of a bus route in Changanassery to being in charge of an international life-saving project, Vinod’s life was nothing short of phenomenal.
Though his own life was humble, the Kerala bus conductor’s heart revealed all. In the shadow of the COVID-19 crisis, his initiative was a savior that facilitated the availability of proper supplies of blood in the hospitals. His vision and ever-continuing commitment spawned a platform on which ordinary citizens could perform acts of extraordinary charity.
In the UAE alone, Vinod’s vision has saved some 200,000 lives. “We donate over 6,000 units of blood every year,” testified Unni Punnara, a UAE-based BDK volunteer and Vinod’s best friend. “Each unit saves three lives, his legacy lives on with every drop.”
Keeping the Legacy of Kerala Bus Conductor Alive Beyond Borders
The Kerala bus conductor’s initiative fruited most immediately in the UAE, where on November 1, 2014, Kerala Foundation Day, BDK was formally launched by three Indian expatriates who had the vision. What began as a dream evolved into a community with over 20,000 followers and 60 volunteer deeds running blood drives, awareness campaigns, and donation appeals across the emirates.
In addition to blood donation, the Kerala bus conductor association in India continued to serve various causes ‘Sneha Sadhya’ provided Sunday lunch for the underprivileged, ‘Sneha Kilukkam’ cheered up children with cancer with gifts and chocolates, and ‘Sneha Puthappu’ consoled hospital patients with blankets and bedspreads.
Even on his deathbed, Vinod was a living witness to courage and selflessness. Having survived a liver transplant fighting it out staunchly with the help of his older son Adithyan, who contributed half his liver Vinod died of complications from his heart and kidneys. But his last desire was not for praise or approval. “He had once wanted that he would get just one tear from a person whose life had been saved because of his work,” said Unni. “Now, thousands are crying.”
In his memory, the UAE chapter of BDK will sponsor two future blood donations in his name on July 20 at Ras Al Khaimah’s Saqar Hospital and on July 27 at Dubai Blood Donation Centre. This will be a living tribute to a Kerala bus conductor who made kindness a tangible reality and left behind a cause beyond frontiers.
