Ban on e-bikes & e-scooters in Dubai Sparks Safety Debate Among Residents

Dubai, July 13, 2025 — The ban on e-bikes & e-scooters in Dubai has become a warm subject in the city.  This action seeks to address increasing safety concerns but it has caused a huge debate among the people. Various communities have begun to forbid or restrict the usage of such devices within their jurisdictions. Residents feel equally divided: some praised it on grounds of safety while others fear losing a convenient way of transport.

Why the Ban on E-bikes & E-scooters in Dubai?

The ban on e-bikes & e-scooters in Dubai was introduced after a sharp increase in accidents and injuries. In 2024, Dubai recorded 254 accidents involving e-scooters and bicycles. These incidents resulted in 10 deaths and 259 injuries. In the first five months of 2025, 13 more life were lost due to e-scooter misuse and jewalking. The prospect of injuries arising from the increased use of e-bikes and e-scooters is undeniably high in Dubai.

The order to ban the use of e-bikes and e-scooters in Dubai is now enforced by communities such as Victory Heights and Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR). The prime concern for the enactment of this ban is the safety of residents and tourists. Numerous complaints were received regarding reckless riding, most often done by the younger crowd. These riders would mindlessly flout traffic rules, snaking between roads and footpaths, all without wearing helmets or any other form of safety gear.

The Victory Heights Owners Committee said the ban was not an easy decision. They have property loss and safety threats due to e-scooters and e-bikes. After talking with residents and security staff, they decided that the ban on e-bikes & e-scooters in Dubai would help protect the community.

Mixed Reactions to the Ban

The ban on e-bikes & e-scooters in Dubai has elicited reactions that cut across the spectrum. Some residents admire this banning, saying it will make their community safer. Stricter rules need to be enforced that do not facilitate accidents and injuries. One example is JBR, where the ban was embraced by many who wanted to have safe pathways to walk on-away from scooters whisking by at close range.

However, not everyone agrees with the ban on e-bikes & e-scooters in Dubai. Many youth feel that the ban is inappropriate.  They argue that only a few riders behave recklessly, and most use these devices responsibly. For many, e-bikes and e-scooters are not just fun but also a way to manage stress, stay active, and socialize. Some residents rely on them for daily commutes, especially in large communities where walking long distances can be difficult.

Other people say that lack of proper infrastructure is a major problem for e-bikes and e-scooters in Dubai. Riders feel unwanted on roads, pavements, and even dirt. They believe that if these devices are allowed for sale, then they should be a safe place to use. Instead of a complete ban on e-bikes & e-scooters in Dubai, they suggest better regulation, education and enforcement.

The Way Forward

Some specialists maintain that banning e-bikes should not be the only deal for e-scooters in Dubai. They argue for a specific set of rules, more education, and strong enforcement. Riders should undergo a safety test and wear protective gear. Parents and managers of communities should also take some responsibility to ensure the safe use of these devices.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has laid some regulations, including the age limit of 16 and permit requirements, but many argue it should go further.  The discussion is bound to continue on banning e-bikes, e-scooters in Dubai. With safety being a concern, though, many residents hope to find a compromise that would allow the devices to be used safely and responsibly.
