The UAE’s first national passenger railway is all set to launch, with the initial phase connecting Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Fujairah, and Sharjah. The 900-kilometer rail network covers 11 stations, marking a shift from years of freight-only operations to passenger services. The rollout is scheduled for 2026, however, no official launch date has been confirmed yet.
The Scale of What’s Been Built
The rail is not just a commuter line between two cities, but a connecting link running through the entire country. From Al Sila on the Saudi border to Fujairah on the East Coast, the Etihad railway line touches industrial zones, university campuses, desert towns, and major urban centres along the way.
For planning, design, and delivery of the project, a workforce of more than 7000 experts and workers dedicated over 24.5 million man hours. Out of total 13 trains in the fleet, 10 have already been delivered, tested, and certified to international safety standards. The capacity of each train is up to 400 passengers.
What Can Passengers Expect?
The railway line is to cut intercity commute times by 30 to 40 per cent. Compared to road travel, Abu Dhabi To Dubai will take approximately 57 minutes, whereas Abu Dhabi to Fujairah is estimated to take around one hour and 45 minutes.
The trains are said to run at up to 200 km/hour speed. A future phase reportedly includes a separate high speed line between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, allowing trains to run at 350 km/hour marking a 30-minute journey. The passenger traffic, however, is expected to reach 36.5 million by 2030.
Passengers can expect to find Wi-Fi, charging points, economy, family and first class carriages and a luxury hospitality experience on board. For a country built on roads and air travel, Etihad Rail acts as a missing piece by becoming a ground-level network connecting the UAE not just economically but physically.
