July 23, 2025 | Dubai, UAE: Black Sabbath legend and rock icon Ozzy Osbourne died at 76. His family announced it on Tuesday and was greeted with global tributes. It is with utmost sadness beyond words that we regret to tell you that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne passed away peacefully this morning,” the family revealed. He died in the presence of his family and loved ones. We ask that all of you kindly respect our family’s privacy during these difficult times.”

Although the family has not released the official Ozzy Osbourne’s cause of death, the press and fans are all eager for answers. The news comes on the heels of Osbourne’s very potent Black Sabbath reunion performance in Birmingham just weeks prior. Dubbed his “final bow,” the show was his first with the full band in two decades and is now remembered as a fitting farewell.

From Birmingham to Global Fame

Born on December 3rd, 1948, in Birmingham, England, to John Michael Osbourne, Ozzy Osbourne began at the bottom and went on to shape an era. Before joining Black Sabbath and Geezer Butler, later Tony Iommi and Bill Ward, during the mid-1960s, he was employed in lowly jobs, one of which was working in a slaughterhouse. Their heavy music that was doom-laden added a lot to creating the foundation that would be heavy metal one day.

Osbourne’s second studio album, Paranoid, topped UK charts and launched Osbourne to global fame. “Godfather of Heavy Metal” and “Prince of Darkness,” by his own admission, Ozzy Osbourne was a counterculture legend. His uninhibited stage antics, ingesting a bat head when he played a concert in 1982 – outraged, but solidified, his status.

Ozzy Osbourne’s cause of death is yet not officially declared, but he has been suffering from medical complications over the last two years. He took a tumble seriously in 2019 and was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease subsequently. Despite suffering from these hurdles, he continued performing at times and had an overwhelming urge to express thanks one last time to the fans on stage.

A Legacy Beyond Music of Ozzy Osbourne

Outside of his music, Ozzy was made even more famous as one of the breakout stars of the reality blockbuster, The Osbournes, which aired its very first season in 2002. The program, featuring wife Sharon and kids Jack, Kelly, and Aimee, documented his offbeat home to the world. Sharon Osbourne went on to create a successful media career, with Kelly Osbourne also becoming well-known as part of the entertainment scene.

Ozzy Osbourne’s cause of death is not yet established but the public and the media think it might be something to do with his recent ill health. Whatever the reason, fellow artists’ tsunami of tributes and worldwide tributes are a testament to his colossal cultural influence.

Friends Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward had tearful farewells. Butler wrote, “Goodbye dear friend, thanks for all those years, we had some great fun.” Iommi declared, “There won’t ever be another like him.” Ward simply inquired, “Where will I find you now? You’re forever in my heart.”

Ozzy Osbourne

Even though Black Sabbath had fired him in 1979 due to drug abuse, Ozzy Osbourne built a career as an international solo sensation and ultimately reunited with the band in 1997. He released 11 solo albums and collected a ton of Grammys, with two in 2023.

Ozzy Osbourne’s cause of death will perhaps never be fully able to account for his story. What’s indisputable is his legacy, he provided a face and voice to an era in which millions felt empowered and seen. Even in his old age, he was a monument to defiance and fortitude.

His last Black Sabbath show in Birmingham was a fortuitous goodbye. “If I can’t tour and carry it on, I just want to do one show and be like, ‘Hi guys, thank you for my life,” he told Rolling Stone in 2023.

Ozzy Osbourne’s cause of death is secondary at this time to the legacy that he will leave. He is survived by his wife Sharon, six children, and millions of people all over the world.
