ABU DHABI, 18 October 2026: Walk past a neighbourhood sports centre in the UAE on any evening and you’ll see the idea at work. The country’s community sports model is built around ordinary residents, not just athletes. WAM describes it as an ecosystem joining infrastructure, wider participation and talent development.
Who the Community Sports Model Reaches
Nobody is left out by design. Programmes now cater to children, young people, senior citizens and People of Determination. That breadth is what separates this community sports model from a one-off fitness campaign.
Where the Community Sports Model Is Growing
Al Dhafra is a good example. The Abu Dhabi Sports Council recently looked at Abu Dhabi 360 centres there, including Ghayathi and Madinat Zayed.
Dubai is moving in a similar direction. Sports Council talks have looked at turning clubs into long-term sports and community centres. If that goes ahead, the community sports model would sit right at the neighbourhood doorstep.
Why It Matters for Health
Think of it as a simple trade: a little effort now, fewer health worries later. Regular activity lifts mood and fitness and lowers the chance of illnesses that come with a sedentary routine. That is the everyday value of a community sports model.
Official Reaction to the Community Sports Model
Sports Minister Dr Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi pointed to Al Wathba as proof. The Ramadan tournament brought together 10,000 participants in 16 competitions. He sees events like this, he said, as more than recreation, since they feed the wider community sports model and national development.

Preventive Health Tips
Prevention doesn’t need a gym membership. The WHO recommends about 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week for adults, which is roughly 20 minutes a day. Children need closer to an hour daily. A community sports model makes those numbers easier to reach.
A few sensible habits help. If you’re over 40, or have a heart condition, see a doctor before you start. Stretch first, because cold muscles tear easily. Keep a water bottle close, and don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink. In the UAE heat, play at dawn or after sunset rather than at midday. Eat properly and sleep well too, as your body repairs itself overnight.
Keep it up and the long-term gains add up: lower risk of obesity, diabetes and heart disease. That is what a community sports model is ultimately for.
How the Model Keeps People Coming Back
Consistency is the real challenge. Abu Dhabi’s community events aim to make sport part of daily life, strengthen ties between neighbours, nurture young talent and run through the year.
National Sports Day adds an annual push. Together they keep the community sports model from fading after the first burst of enthusiasm.
The 2031 Target Behind the Community Sports Model
The goal comes with a number. By 2031, the UAE wants 71 per cent of residents playing sport, backed by 17 separate initiatives. Every community sports model event moves that figure forward.
Economic Impact of the Model
There’s money in it too. Stadiums, broadcast deals and sponsorship are drawing investment, which makes sport a genuine economic engine.
The pipeline reaches the top as well. Partnerships with the NBA and UFC, and football academies tied to Manchester City, Barcelona and Real Madrid, help develop local talent. A grassroots community sports model feeds it.
What Comes Next for the Community Sports Model
Expect more of the same, only bigger. The Ministry says it will keep expanding community participation and use these platforms to discover talent. If that happens, the community sports model could become a template other country copy.
