Barcelona, Spain – May 19, 2025
Barcelona have won the 2024–25 La Liga title, their 28th overall, after a season of comebacks, breakthroughs and high stakes drama. Under new manager Hansi Flick they beat city rivals Espanyol 2-0 in a dominant performance that sealed the deal with one game to spare.

A Season of Redemption for Barcelona

After two years without domestic silverware Barcelona are back on top and the fans are hopeful again. With Robert Lewandowski, João Félix and breakout star Lamine Yamal leading the way the team showed resilience and tactical maturity. Flick who took over at the start of the season was praised for building a balanced side that combined attack with defence.

“This season was about building a new identity,” Flick said after the win. “The players trusted the process and this title is reward for their hard work.”

Lamine Yamal: The 17-Year-Old Wonder

One of the stories of the season has been the rise of 17-year-old winger Lamine Yamal. His pace, creativity and eye for goal turned games in Barcelona’s favour. In the El Clásico earlier this year Yamal’s solo run and assist set up the winning goal and turned the title race.

He finished the season with 12 goals and 14 assists – impressive numbers for a teenager – and is now the future of Spanish football.

Real Madrid’s Missed Opportunity

While Barcelona celebrated Real Madrid were left to wonder what went wrong. Despite signing Kylian Mbappé last summer the Galácticos couldn’t keep up in the title race. Mbappé scored 40 league goals, breaking Alfredo Di Stéfano’s 71-year-old record but the team was inconsistent overall.

Midfielder Jude Bellingham was blunt in his post match interview after the 1-1 draw with Sevilla. “It’s been a weak season. We had the talent but not the focus. That must change before the Club World Cup,” he said.

Villarreal Stuns Barcelona in Thriller

Despite having the title wrapped up Barcelona’s final home game ended in a 3-2 defeat to Villarreal. The Yellow Submarine fought hard to get the points they needed to get into the Champions League – which they did, knocking out Real Sociedad in the process.

The win was Villarreal’s return to Europe’s top competition, a big achievement under manager Marcelino García Toral. “This team never gives up. We’ve made our fans proud,” he said after the game.

La Liga Breaks Revenue Record

La Liga president Javier Tebas announced record revenue for the league, €5 billion for the 2023/24 season – the highest ever. Broadcasting, merchandising and club sponsorships were the main contributors to the growth, the top flight of Spanish football is in good health.

First Summer Signing

Before the new season even starts, Real Madrid have made their first move by signing Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth. The Dutch centre back was on the radar of several Premier League clubs but Madrid moved quickly to strengthen their defence – an area that was their weakness this season.

Final Weekend: Relegation and Europe Spots Up for Grabs

The title race is over, but the final matchday will still be intense. Valencia, Getafe, and Cádiz are in a relegation dogfight with only one point between them. Athletic Bilbao and Real Betis are battling for the final Europa League spot.

So much to play for, so expect a thrilling end to the season.

Looking Ahead

Barcelona may have won the league but this season’s La Liga has given us so much more than a title race. New stars, records, financial growth and managerial changes for next season will make 2025/26 an exciting one.

For now, fans across Spain will enjoy the final weekend, and Barcelona fans will celebrate a well-deserved return to the top of Spanish football.
