Why Dubai Is Turning Its Malls Into Gyms?

Step into Dubai Mall at 7am on a Tuesday in August and you will find something unexpected. Runners in fluorescent trainers moving through the ground floor corridor. Elderly couples walking at a steady pace. Young women in pairs, earphones in, not shopping but exercising. The mall has become the gym, and it happened deliberately. Established by the Dubai Crown Prince, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Dubai Mallathon has transformed Dubai’s top shopping malls into fitness arenas for the summer. Over 100,000 have already taken part in the second edition, which has resulted in over 220 million steps being taken in two months.

A Record Already Broken

Dubai Mallathon successfully broke the Guinness World Record of Most Runners in a Mall Run Event for the very first time tonight with 1,392 runners at Dubai Hills Mall. The second edition already has surpassed that number. Ten times the number of participants in eight locations, 220 million steps in two months. In addition, the project is ongoing. It will run through Sept. 15, 2026 – just about three weeks more for the city to work those numbers up.

What makes that scale remarkable is the access model. Participation is completely free. There is no registration. You walk into any participating mall between 6am and 10am, collect a participant wristband at the venue, and start. The wristband also gives you access to exclusive offers and discounts at shops, cafés, and restaurants inside the mall.

However, online registration via the official Dubai Mallathon / Dubai Sports Council digital channels is required to receive participant badges and log steps tracked by the official app. Consequently, the programme rewards participation without asking anything financially from those who show up.

Eight Venues, One Community

The full list of participating venues reflects a deliberate effort to cover the city geographically. Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates, City Centre Mirdif, Dubai Festival City Mall, City Centre Deira, Dubai Hills Mall, Gate Avenue at DIFC, and Ibn Battuta Mall are all active.

Gate Avenue joined on August 1. Moreover, Ibn Battuta joined on August 17, responding to growing demand from residents in the western end of the city. Additionally, Dubai International Airport became the first non-mall venue to host the initiative, opening parts of the terminal to invite-only Mallathons during August.

Each venue provides dedicated walking and running tracks inside a fully air-conditioned environment. In a city where August temperatures exceed 40 degrees Celsius and humidity makes outdoor activity genuinely dangerous for many, environmental control is not just a comfort. Moreover, for elderly residents, People of Determination, and families with young children, it is the difference between exercising and not.

Who Is Actually Showing Up?

The demographic range of the Dubai Mallathon is one of its most interesting dimensions. According to the reports, government entities, private sector companies, community organisations, families, senior citizens, People of Determination, residents, and visitors are all participating. That breadth is unusual for a fitness initiative. Additionally, most exercise programmes skew toward a particular age group or fitness level. This one is genuinely attracting the entire community.

The elderly residents walking early morning laps are using the track differently from the runners chasing personal records at the same time. Women exercising in groups are using the space differently from the corporate teams doing their weekend step challenges together. However, they are all in the same place, moving in the same direction, and the result feels less like a fitness event and more like a neighbourhood choosing to be active together.

Beyond Steps

Weekend sporting competitions with prizes run across participating malls throughout the programme, creating bursts of energy and competition within the broader walking and running format. These competitions add structure for participants who want something more focused than a morning walk.

The Dubai Mallathon is formally embedded within three major strategic frameworks. Thus, it supports the Dubai Social Agenda 33, Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033, and Year of Family 2026. Those three alignments explain the initiative’s design philosophy. Physical activity as a social habit, not a personal discipline. Community fitness rather than individual achievement. Additionally, family participation is built into the default experience.

Dubai’s malls have always been community hubs. They host concerts, exhibitions, prayer facilities, and restaurants. Adding fitness to that list changes who comes at 7am and why. That shift, from place of consumption to place of activity, is what the Mallathon has made visible.
