Saturday, May 17, 2025 – Dubai: As the summer draws near, many residents of the UAE are preparing to travel to Europe. But with all the excitement of their European adventures also come hidden extras in the form of eco fees, city taxes, and sustainability contributions. European Taxes for UAE Travellers charges are added on in addition to the standard fees for hotels and flights. These charges add little at once but can amount to significant sums for the traveller.

What Are European Taxes for UAE Travellers?

European taxes for UAE travellers are the additional fees levied by European countries and cities upon tourists. These fees are not necessarily part of your hotel price or airline fare. They come at the end of your visit as surcharges added on to your hotel bill or as fees taken upon arrival in certain cities for daytime visits.

European local governments cite these taxes as helping to control the effects of tourism, safeguard the environment, and preserve history. To UAE tourists, however, the fees amount to paying for what was previously free, including clean air and entrance to cities. Travel expert Jamie Fairhead cautions that all these small charges amount to more than Dh480 on one trip for an entire family.

Where Will You Find These Taxes?

UAE visitors are not just taxed on their hotel stays. More and more cities have day visitors’ fees, port fees for cruise ship passengers, and surcharges for major tourist destinations. Here are some examples:

  • Venice, Italy: Charges a Dh24 city access fee for each person, including day trippers.
  • Barcelona, Spain: Charges a tourism tax of Dh13.4 per evening and a cruise supplement of Dh14.6.
  • Amsterdam, Netherlands: Charges 7% of the room price as hotel tax and adds surcharges on air quality.
  • Rome, Italy: The tourist contribution varies between Dh14.6 and Dh34.1 nightly, depending on accommodation.
  • Balearic Islands, Spain: A sustainable tourism tax of between Dh4.87 and Dh19.4 is paid each night.
  • Ljubljana, Slovenia: An environmental surcharge of approximately Dh9.7 nightly.
  • Dubrovnik, Croatia: A sojourn tax of approximately Dh7.31 nightly.
  • Vienna, Austria: A 3.2% local levy on the room rate.

Other destinations such as Paris, Santorini, Reykjavik, Lisbon, Porto, Zermatt, Cologne, Berlin, and Malta also have their versions of European taxes for UAE travellers.

Why Are These Taxes Increasing?

The increase in European taxes for UAE travellers is caused by a number of factors. European destinations are experiencing an influx of tourists every year, putting pressure on the environment and the local services. The governments apply the taxes for repairing roads, keeping parks in shape, and preserving famous monuments. They also expect the fees to promote more responsible tourism.

For tourists from the UAE, these fees are confounding, as each nation has its own name for them. “Eco contribution”, “sojourn fee”, or “clean air fee” do not sound ominous, but all refer to additional fees added to your bill.

How Can UAE Travellers Prepare?

In order not to be surprised, research European taxes for UAE travellers beforehand, before booking your trip. Here are some tips:

  • Double-check your hotel price for whether local taxes are included or will be included at check-out.
  • Check the most current rules for every city on your destination list, as fees tend to be updated frequently.
  • Add these European taxes for UAE travellers to your travel budget to not overspend.
  • Inquire with your hotel or travel agent about your extra charges.

With knowledge on hand, UAE tourists can make better preparations and steer clear of shocks associated with unforeseen expenditures at the end of their vacations.

The Impact on UAE Tourists and the Travel Industry

European taxes for UAE travellers are transforming holidaymakers’ vacation plans. Tourists might opt for countries where the fees are lower, and others would shorten their vacations in order to save. The tourism sector has to be more open about these fees and make the travellers aware of the real expense of their vacations.

In short, European taxes for UAE travellers vacationing have become the new normal for touring Europe. These taxes help support communities on the ground as well as the environment but add to the overall price of travel. If UAE tourists learn about these hidden fees beforehand, however, they can make better decisions and have happy European vacations without unexpected shocks.
