For years, Etihad Rail left one question, when? The trains arrived. The tracks were also laid. The stations went up in Mohammed bin Zayed City and Jumeirah Golf Estates and along the east coast. The freight network also went live. However, the launch date of the passenger rail service remained a frustrating mystery to millions of people in UAE who have been waiting and watching.
The vagueness was broken Tuesday, June 23, 2026. The operational phase of the passenger rail service will start its maiden run on 30 June 2026 between Abu Dhabi and Fujairah. It will take only 1 hour and 45 minutes. The UAE is one of few countries in the region to have an intercity passenger rail service in operation, seven days later.

Passenger Rail Service: The Phased Launch, Date by Date
The June 30 start is not the full network. It is the opening move in a phased rollout, and the dates that follow are now officially confirmed. Dubai and Al Dhaid stations will open on September 30, 2026. It is followed by the Al Dhafra region stations on December 30, 2026.
The passenger train will then complete its route with Sharjah station on March 30, 2027. The formal inauguration of the network, which is considered the full official launch, is set for September 30 when Dubai comes online.

What It Costs and How to Book
The price of the ticket for Abu Dhabi-Fujairah will begin at AED 55 for Comfort Class. Also, it is AED 120 for Premium Class. From June 23, 2026, customers will be able to book journeys and obtain tickets via various convenient channels, such as the Etihad Rail mobile app and official website.
This means that the booking window opened today, the same day that the launch date was announced. So those who wish to be in the first trains on Tuesday next week should begin to make their plans and bookings now.
Passenger Rail Service: What The Trains Offer?
Before the first passenger comes on board, it’s important to grasp the scale of what’s been done. The rail line is 900km long. It will eventually link 11 stations, between Al Sila on the Saudi border and Fujairah on the east coast. It was designed, planned and delivered by more than 7,500 experts who put in more than 24.5 million man hours.
The speed of the Etihad Rail passenger trains can reach up to 200 km/h. This cuts commuters’ travel time by 30 to 40 per cent from current transport methods. The capacity of each train will be limited to 400 passengers. It will also be equipped with Wi-Fi, entertainment systems, charging points and some food and drink service.
Passenger services will operate using two different train models. Chinese-built CRC coaches carrying around 365 passengers, and Spanish-manufactured CAF coaches accommodating approximately 369 passengers.
In 2024, it was confirmed that passengers will be able to use their nol cards when travelling on Etihad Rail, following an MoU signed between the Roads and Transport Authority and Etihad Rail to integrate ticket booking and fare payment with the nol system. That integration matters enormously for Dubai residents, who can move from metro to train without switching payment systems.
Journey Times That Change the Calculation
The April article noted that Abu Dhabi to Fujairah would take approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes, and Abu Dhabi to Dubai around 57 minutes. Official launch confirmed both figures. Also, travelling from Abu Dhabi to Dubai and from Dubai to Fujairah will only take 50 minutes each.
An independent high-speed train service will be able to travel between Abu Dhabi and Dubai at speeds of up to 350 km an hour and take 30 minutes. The standard network, which opens this month, sets up the stage for that high speed line, although there is no definite launch date.
After it opens for tourism, they expect it to be able to carry 36.5 million passengers a year. The target number could be met if the network is able to connect well with the first and last-mile connectivity at each station, such as metro, bus, taxi and e-hailing services which Etihad Rail has confirmed are a key focus area for the network.

Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of Etihad Rail, pointed out that the passenger rail service represents a major turning point in the national transport system’s development and will bring an advanced mobility system that offers a modern, safe and very efficient travel experience.
The announcement is more significant than it sounds because it came as a shock to a nation that was founded on roads, cars and airports. The driver who makes the trip from Abu Dhabi to Dubai in the morning, coming back tired at the end of the day has a viable option on June 30th.
The tourist flying into Dubai and wanting to see Fujairah without renting a car has a train. The family connecting across emirates without sitting on a highway has an option that did not exist last week. That is what a launch date does. It turns a project into a reality.
