July 5, 2025 | Dubai, UAE – Accessing a US visa for UAE students is a dream for many so they can build their careers in universities like MIT, Stanford and Harvard among others. But with the shift in new US visa rules, students need to keep a lot in mind to ensure gaining entry.

According to the new US Visa rules issued by the American embassy, US visas for UAE students will require them to make their social media accounts public. This updated US visa rule applies to all applicants seeking F, M, and J non-immigrant visas, for academic and vocational purposes. According to the US visa rules, these applicants must change their social media profiles to “public” so that US authorities can view them during the review process.

As the US steps up its screening measures to get the US visa for UAE students, there will be close examination of visa applicants’ online activity. The decision comes as a part of the broader concerns for safety and security of America and its citizens, which began under the Trump administration. The US Visa rules now involve increased social media checks to detect security concerns or risks to US national interests.

Stricter Vetting Process On Application Of US Visas For UAE Students

The earlier freeze on US visas for UAE student and exchange visitor visas was implemented by the US president on May 27. The visa applications have been opened now but involve stricter US visa rules and screening procedures.

The State Department said that every visa decision is tied to national security, and the U.S. must carefully assess applicants to ensure no one with harmful intentions toward Americans or national interests is granted entry.

According to an internal cable from June 18, shared with U.S. embassies and consulates on June 25, there shall be thorough background checks on all visa applicants to spot any individuals who may have hostile sentiments toward America as per new US visa rules.

For ease of the people considering a US visa for UAE Students, the visa categories have been explained below.

  1. F Visa: For students wishing in accredited colleges or universities for academics.
  2. M Visa: For students who are pursuing vocational or non-academic training.
  3. J Visa: For people who are part of cultural and educational exchange programs such as  students, researchers, teachers, and interns involved in exchange initiatives approved by the US.

How Does The US Visa Rule Changes Impact The Students

New vetting guidelines now require consular officers to review an applicant’s entire online presence. They’re instructed to use “any appropriate search engines or resources” to find suspicious or derogatory content.

Under the US visa rules, applicants must disclose all social media accounts used in the past five years. This may lead to longer processing and intense scrutiny, resulting in fewer appointments for F, M, and J visas. These hassles might push students to consider alternative nations like Australia or the UK.The students are also worried that making their social media accounts public might expose them to several cyber security crimes and dangers.

The US Visa for UAE students also mentions that priority will be given to expedited visa requests from foreign-born physicians in exchange programs and students applying to U.S. universities where international students make up less than 15% of enrollment.
